if they won't release my favorite film on DVD...

...then, I'll make my own. I had hoped that the release of Kieslowski's trois colours trilogy would prompt the release of The Double Life of Véronique, one of my favorite films and not available on DVD in any region.

so, i'm digitizing my full frame laserdisc of the film, performing some color correction and contrast improvement in final cut pro, and matting it to it's proper dimension of 1.66:1. then i'll create the dvd in dvd studio pro.

anyone else ever do this?

Have you done it yet? I would think you would need a lot of space on hard drive to store the data.

We've all got our personal laundry lists, but the fact that this brilliant, hypnotic film languishes in the vaults, while a Superbit release of Sharon Stone impersonaitng Yosemite Sam is thrust at us like it's some kind of prize or something...it gives a man pause, let me tell you.

Well, it's still a laserdisc transferred to DVD, so it's not exactly the same thing. I've got old TV commercials transferrred to DVD from Beta, but they still look and sound like Betamax, not like the original masters.

Yea but at least you have it in a nice format! No need to keep Bulky LDs. (and in the case of tapes, no more degradation AND a nice format)

/me pets Star Wars and Song of the South DVDs

I've actually done this with a few of my rotting VHS tapes... things that will likely never see the light of day in any sort of release. The quality still stinks, but at least it won't get worse, right?

You have now jinxed yourself! I see DVD rot creeping into your cabinet right now just searching for those.

My friend made himself the definitive Song Of The South DVD from his japanese laserdisc.

"Why's it definitive?"
- "Well, find me a better Song Of The South DVD."
"Point made."

I do this all the time with esoteric VHS tapes in my collection... though I burn them to VCD instead of DVD. (I only have a CDR drive, no DVD burner...yet ) The quality of (well authored) VCDs is on par with VHS and won't degrade so at least the quality of these VCDs (slightly less than the original tape) won't get any worse.

I highly doubt that the "WPIX Yule Log" and "Day of the Triffids :BBC miniseries" will ever see a DVD release so preserving it on VCD was the only option.
