Confirmed: Superman Theatrical on DVD

OK Guys,

I have a thread going in Internatioanal on this, but I thought I should post this here for the Superman fanatics like me.

The theatrical version IS on DVD!

Picture is slightly blurry, but VERY good IMHO. Much better than the laserdisc for sure.

It is R2 PAL. I will be getting a copy ASAP.

You can see screenshots here - http://pub1.ezboard.com/fsupermancin...cID=9478.topic

My original thread on the topic is in International Forum here - http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=296386

Thanks to Stoney in the SupermanCinema forum for checking up on the disc and posting the screenshots!!

Again, I am sorry if this shouldn't be here, but I am so happy I can not friggin stand it!!! This makes my day, no month!!! Actually, I could not be happier right now...well, unless maybe the release of the Star Wars:OT was announced, but Superman is my all-time favorite, so this may actually be simply the best news I could get right now!!!

OK, now off to try to get myself a copy.

Forgive my ignorance on this but the SE is the theatrical one with added scenes, right?

Yup. 8 Minutes of addes scenes.

I personally grew up watching the theatrical version, and was disappointed that the SE did not utilize seamless branching or in some other way give the option of watching the theatrical cut. That is why I am thrilled to discover that it is in fact available!

So this is the one with the scenes that were shown on ABC's broadcast of it way back when?

No, this is the one WITHOUT those scenes (the Special Edition contains most of them).

Man, I hate to say this but I agree with one of the posters on that Superman forum -- those caps are "shite".

That looks bad...Episode II bad. And I was hoping for something good, dang it.

They may be "shite" but they are better than my laserdisc. I am not saying it is perfect by any means. I am just happy I will be able to get it at all. I guess I should reserve my opinion until I actually see it myself, but I am happy that I will be able to own the theatrical cut.

Yes. It does look blurry. Still, I want to see it for myself. Too bad Warner didn't make the theatrical available on the SE disc via seamless branching or something. Still, the SE is one of the best discs out there. I will add this theatrical to my collection just so I can at least have it on DVD. It is definitely better than the LD-DVD transfer I had made of my laserdisc.

No thanks, I'll take the amazing picture and 5.1 sound and fast forward over the added scenes (except the Gauntlet which should have been in the movie in the first place).

Lousy picture quality and PAL speedup for one of my favorite soundtracks of all-time? I'll stick with the WB disc.

not to go too much off tangent here, but does the "Superman II" DVD have the scene where Non kills the kid as he racing off to alert others of the destruction of the town. This scene seems to appear and reappear in alternate cuts of the film.

I personally love the added scenes in Superman - so this version doesn't mean a lot to me. I would like to see the Donner version or some ultimate cut of Superman II tho'.

No. The DVD is the theatrical version of Superman II. That scene is only in (some of the) TV versions.

I'm still trying to figure out how to order the disc, but now I'm starting to reconsider.

I read on the other forum (link above) that while it's the theatrical cut, the sound mix is the same they used for the SE, and I'm not a fan of the new mix. At all.

Back to the laser disc I suppose...

The special edition cut with the added 8 minutes positively adds to the original. I don't want to see the original cut again - although I understand why some people still want it.

Tell me about it! I can understand the mixed feelings some have towards many of the new scenes, but the missing Brando-Reeves dialogue is so valuable to the story and so impressive to watch that I can't imagine watching the film without it.

And the commentary on the SE is so extraordinarily good. Amazing, really. So much information, and tremendous fun to hear.

I don't want the theatrical INSTEAD OF the SE. I just want them both. I want to be able to see the film the way I grew up watching it.

I like most of the new scenes, and the ones that I don't like, I can live with (they aren't great, but they don't destroy the film).

My main issue with the current DVD is the new sound mix, which is pretty radically different than the way the film has been presented for the 20 years before. I know the sounds of this movie by heart and it is still pretty jarring to hear the replacement sounds they've used.

But, given that this PAL DVD apparently retains this altered mix, I think I'll pass...

I love the new soundmix and I saw the film on opening day.
The only scene that I feel hurts the picture is when Superman (with disco hair) trying to hug the image of Brando.
Leave that one on the cutting room floor!

I don't even remember what the theatrical cut was like so the added scenes are a cool addition that does not hamper the movie in any way.
