What is wrong with the Armageddon Criterion Edition??!

I have seen the movie Armageddon, and i want to see it but, what is the real lowdown on this movie, and especially, is it worth getting the Criterion version of the movie? I've noticed on the Criterion website, that a lot of titles that they release are of the "shee shee, foo, foo, flavor" but I like action flicks and .......is it worth it??!!

It has Armageddon on it? *rimshot*

Thank you! I'll be here all week, please tip your waitress.

Seriously, the only negative I've heard about it is it's not 16x9. Otherwise fans of the movie think it's great. I caught about 30 seconds on TV once and nearly got seasick so I've never watched the whole thing.

Anamorphic, or lack of is the only problem with it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's non-anamorphic... Other than that I've heard that it's a decent DVD... Sorry I can't offer up any first hand knowledge... Michael Bay and I, we don't get along...

It's one impressive dvd. Get it, if non-anamorphic is okay with you.

If you like the movie, then it's extremely worth it. Two commentaries, both excellent, and a funny gag reel make the price of admission worth it, but there are plenty of other features as well.

I also have a severe allergy to Michael Bay (I'm starting to get a rash just typing this . . .). But, if you like the movie, the only drawbacks are that it's non-anamorphic, and the pricetag (original MSRP: $49.99, but available at DVD Planet for $25.99 + S&H).

Fry's had some copies at 19.99 at one time. It was the single sized w/ tray version. There is also a double thick version out there too.

So, I'm thinking if the giant from "Jack and the Beanstalk" had been effeminate, he would of said that instead of "Fie, Fie, Foe, Fum."

Seriously, I think he meant "chichi" and "frou-frou". Obviously, the average Criterion release doesn't ooze enough testosterone for him . . . To dispel that myth, kayizm, you might take a look at:

I too am not interested in most Criterion DVDs. Most of the films they put out are lost on me. The only ones I have are Chasing Amy, The Rock and Armageddon.

All are well worth it.

The Criterion Armageddon has a very nice transfer and outstanding 5.1 track.

If the disc was anamorphic, it would be near perfect.

It was an even better DVD when you could get it through Columbia House as an enrollment DVD. Imo, it's not worth much more than that, because it's non-anamorphic. The commentaries are cool, however.

I still can't figure out for the life of me why people seem to violently hate this movie. I thought it was very fun, exciting, touching, and entertaining.

I own the Criterion but am not a huge fan of the movie. It's a great piece to show off my sound system, but I highly doubt I'll ever watch it unless there are people in the house asking to watch it. That being said, I also don't understand the venom I see directed towards this flick. It's certainly no piece of art, but it's stupidly entertaining. I'd take Armageddon over Pearl Harbor any day. Armageddon was a lot less insulting. It was a big dumb action movie that still knew it was a dumb action movie even during the most cloying attempts at drama. Pearl Harbor actually thinks it is about more than cool shots of ships blowing up and American flags waving in slow motion. With Armageddon, Bay thought he made a huge summer action movie, which he did. With Pearl Harbor he seriously thought he made All Quiet On The Western Front.

Let's try and keep this from turning into an "I hate/love Armageddon" thread, and keep it on the topic of what's so hot (or not) about the Criterion Collection version of the disc. Thanks!

Count me in as another one who would highly recommend the Criterion version. Even if you think the movie is so-so, the DVD is exemplary. If you don't want to spend the ~$28 then look for it used.

I don't get it, why do people her find it "ok" if Criterion release a non-anamorphic disc, but when other studios do that, it's an outrage!

The Criterion disc is a very nice presentation. The gag reel has some very funny moments, and the picture and sound are quite a notch above the Buena Vista single disc release.
