The Decalogue (re-release question)

I've read several sources (that I can no longer seem to find, for the life of me) that have this DVD set being re-released later this year.

Does anyone know when this set will be re-released, if at all?

Also, who will be doing it this time, Image?

Thanks!

Kieslowski's Decalogue is being released exclusively by Chicago-based Facets. The street date is 8/19/03. It is a 3-disc set, with a price tag of $79.95 (which will apparently not be discounted, at least on the Facets website. It's unclear if other online retailers will be carrying this or discounting it.). This is essentially a re-release of the prior Image version (now OOP), using the same transfer and elements.

Note that there is an alternative: a Korean Region 0 release by the company Infinity (on 6 DVDs, including a documentary), which was praised by DVD Beaver as having better picture quality than the Image/Facets release. It sells for $89.95 at HKFlix.com . However see my comments on the subtitling problems with this release here .

From DVDReview:

The three DVD set will include an onscreen preface by Roger Ebert, which introduces viewers to the film in a lively and informative commentary. The DVD also contains an extensive interview with Kieslowski, a visit to the set and an appreciation of Kieslowski that features his colleagues and collaborators commenting on his life and career. An accompanying booklet also includes Kieslowski’s own reminiscences about the origin of the films, a recent interview with screenwriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz, and a complete cast and credits list.
The DVD set will be priced at $79.95 and will arrive on August 19th.

Another thing perhaps worth mentioning from this thread:

is it possible portlandfilmguy, you saw an "authorization" charge on your credit card and assumed it was the actual charge and that the set was shipping out now? b/c, I just received this email from facets, and they said it will begin shipping in August ---

Thanks for your email.

DECALOGUE is coming back out in August. You can, if you like, place a
pre-order now so that a copy will be shipped to you in August. It is
becoming entirely possible (given the large number of orders we're taking)
that all of the incoming copies may already be spoken for by the time they
arrive.

Thanks again,

From DavisDVD on the 8/19 release:

"The 3-DVD set includes an introdcution by film critic Roger Ebert, the featurettes "On the Set of the Decalogue," "Kieslowski Meets the Press", and "Kieslowski Known and Unknown", an interview with scriptwriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz, and a printed booklet with an introduction by Kieslowski."

Were all of these features on the original release?

No, they were not. These are the new additions specific to this release.

I just thought I'd mention that Amazon now has Decalogue up for pre-order - $59.96. It will be released on August 19th.

Wonderful news mediabear. In the meantime I suppose I'll build up my trivia points over at Amazon and hope that some of the other etailers are going to widdle down the price on this as we come closer to the release date.

Is it confirmed that the transfer will be no different than the previous release?

Although it's not unwatchable, there's definitely room for improvement on the current transfer.

In email exchanges I've had with Facets and New Yorker, this is not a new transfer. Only the subtitles were re-done (and features were added). There is a Korean release (Infinity label) with better image quality, but the subtitles leave something to be desired.

More info about The Decalogue release can be found in this thread at the CCF.

I've preordered the Facets release from Best Prices.com for $36.46 (55% off!)--best deal I've seen.

Wow, that's a great price. Never ordered from them before.

Anyone know if DeepDiscountDVD price matches on preorders?

---------

Just answered my own question. Their site says "in stock" items.

I believe they do, you will need to place any pricematch orders via phone. Sent their customer service some e-mail, pointing to the competitor's link and ask for a price match. Maybe this only applies to certain pre-order titles, but they currently say that their Lord of the Rings: Two Towers is guarenteed for lowest online price.

I'm pleasantly surprised at how cheap this is selling for. I thought it would be in the $75 range. It's only $41.49 at buy.com and even cheaper at a place called Bestprices.com. I've never heard of them though.

So will the subtitles still be burned-in?

Since it was originally released for TV I would assume it is full screen.

I just wanted to warn people that have purchased the new Decalogue release and have not seen these films before to:

1. NOT watch Eberts' introduction segment before seeing the films (contains some spoilers)

and 2. NOT read the episode descriptions on the back of the boxes as these are more spoiler laiden than Ebert's intro (these are the same spoiler-laiden descriptions that were on the first release).

There's about an hour's worth of interviews on the last disc. The picture quality is supposed to be improved but I cannot compare since I no longer have the old set. Also, the films are now on 3 single sided discs which I like since I hate double sided discs. There's a booklet too, and the first disc has a 15 minute intro by Ebert.

First release - snappers.
Second release - keepcases.
Third release - back to snappers.

I traded my opened copy of the first release for an unopened copy of the second. I still haven't opened my copy of it, though.

The extra features of the third release don't sound like their worth upgrading again. What's wrong with the subs on the second release that they needed to be redone for the third? Also, is the picture quality the same or not?
