Probably my favorite show of all-time.

I have to agree with everybody else about Band of Brothers. Great series, great DVDs.

I found those Ken Burns sets all very interesting, but I felt that now that I've SEEN them that their rewatchability value is very low. Now I rewatch Sex and the City, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sopranos all the time.

Sex & the city is great. Sopranos is great.

I have the first three seasons of Friends which I watch all the time. I just recently purchased Family Guy vol1 and 24 season1.

24 season1 is a blind buy, but I got it cheap as hell and i've never seen it.

Coupling isn't a "box set"--just a single case. But *definitely* worth owning!

Trek, Buffy, X-Files, etc. aren't worth buying IMO b/c you can see them on reruns and rewatchabiltiy factor is low. I also am content with catching reruns of stuff like Frasier, MASH, etc. Definitely consider whether you really want to watch full seasons of these shows, and if you'll want to watch them *again*.

24 is great, but better as a rental or a loaner. I loved it but don't think I'd watch it again.

For great box sets that will be worth watching again (and again...), my suggestions are:

Sopranos
Monty Python
Fawlty towers
Black Adder
Sports Night
Jeeves & Wooster
Sex and the City is pretty good (the SO loves it)
The Lexx series (seasons 2 & 3 come in box sets now)

[movie box sets]
Godfather
All 3 007 Bond box sets
The Kubrick box set (excellent films)

There are some others mentioned that sound good but I haven't seen and don't own. I do plan to get Son of the Beach soon.

Don't know where your particular tastes lie, but for TV, I like:
  • Cosmos
  • Band of Brothers
  • Monty Python's Flying Circus
  • The Blue Planet
  • The Simpsons
  • The Sandbaggers sets 1 & 2 ( set 3 may be out in Sept.!)

For films:
  • The Alec Guiness Collection
  • Stanley Kubrick Collection
  • Charlie Chaplin Short Comedy Classics - The Complete Restored Essanay & Mutual Collection (Image)
  • The Chaplin Collection, Vol. 1 (Modern Times / The Great Dictator / The Gold Rush / Limelight)
  • German Horror Classics (Kino)
  • The Woody Allen Collection (8 pack)
Edited to add:
The Best Worst of Ed Wood!

I just did a quick overlook so I apologize if this was mentioned, but to me it looked like nobody mentioned one that I thought would have been a 'cool beans' thing that people could own:

--The Twilight Zone!!!

Every episode has been released on dvd

Law & Order: Season One (and the following seasons if/when they are released)

i'm dismayed no one has mentioned it earlier. i'd also second votes for Homicide, Simpsons, Band of Brothers, and 24. From the Earth To the Moon is on my list to pick up.

For me it's Friends - I love the show and it won't be complete until they release and I have every episode.

That's the best recommendations so far. I'd also add My So-Called Life to the essential. Also, for comedies you need: Mr. Show, Clerks: Animated, and Family Guy.

Any new series/sets that have been released since this was posted that have yet to be mentioned?

Has anyone compiled a running list of series/box sets either here or on a site somewhere that is listed by release date?
