Law & Order: Season One (and the following seasons if/when they are released)

i'm dismayed no one has mentioned it earlier. i'd also second votes for Homicide, Simpsons, Band of Brothers, and 24. From the Earth To the Moon is on my list to pick up.

GMLSKIS 06-17-03 01:53 AM

For me it's Friends - I love the show and it won't be complete until they release and I have every episode.

The Exister 06-17-03 07:13 AM

My favorites:

The Prisoner
The Avengers

That's the best recommendations so far. I'd also add My So-Called Life to the essential. Also, for comedies you need: Mr. Show, Clerks: Animated, and Family Guy.

Any new series/sets that have been released since this was posted that have yet to be mentioned?

Has anyone compiled a running list of series/box sets either here or on a site somewhere that is listed by release date?

If you're including UK sets, get "Cleopatra 2525" season 1!

JimRochester 11-11-03 08:46 PM

Band Of Brothers
PBS Civil War
From The Earth To The Moon
Walking With Dinosaurs

CaseyB 11-11-03 09:22 PM

Since no one else mentioned it...for the wrestling fans out there...WWF (now WWE) Tough Enough Season 1 is a must own.

Great idea for a thread. I'm really enjoying reading about all the must have DVDs. I guess Band of Brothers is now on my want list due to all the great reviews here.

blindrocket 11-11-03 09:40 PM

Band of Brothers
The Sopranos Seasons 1-4
Six Feet Under (wish it were widescreen)
King of the Hill
Akira Kurosawa's Four Samurai Classics - Criterion Collection - Boxset

I wish I could afford all of The X-Files seasons!

ctyankee 11-11-03 09:44 PM

Band of Brothers
From The Earth To The Moon
James Bond Collection Set

Twin Peaks - Season One would merit to be in this class but without the Pilot Episode .... no.

Funny, don't remember any votes for any of the Criterion box sets ...

Ky-Fi 11-12-03 07:31 PM

I didn't see the original Outer Limits (vols. 1 & 2) mentioned yet--that's one of my favorites.

And thanks to previous mentions on this forum, I just got Ultraviolet, which I love.

Blackadder is awesome, and the funniest comedy of all time, Fawlty Towers, is a must-have.

I've borrowed the Sopranos, and those are all fantastic.

And for films, I love the Daimajin boxset of the three movies.

Gyno Rhino 11-12-03 07:38 PM

Band of Brothers, no doubt.

You may want to save up for the Kids in the Hall if you're a fan. :)

I beg to differ.
If you are referring to the extras, then Buffy is better.

The shows ?

Buffy will never mean as much to me as Angel does.

kmac 11-13-03 02:07 PM

All of them.

I used to think long and hard and always end up posting my entire collection up to that point.

I have yet to meet with a disappointing box/TV DVD set.

In light of all the recommendations for the "Band of Brothers" DVD set, I have a quick question--for someone who wasn't won over by "Saving Private Ryan" would you still recommend BoB without hesitation?

That depends . . . what was it about SPR that you didn't like?

Personally I would. I sold my copy of Saving Private Ryan after a view viewings......I just find the story ridiculous and empty (not to mention badly written at times with absurdly overly sentimental pap holding together a few random good scenes) despite how great the first 20 mins are and how much I like the DTS track...... I strongly fall in the camp that much preferred The Thin Red Line over that Saving Some Random Idiot At the Expense of Too Many Others movie (actually I consider TTRL to be the best American films of the 1990s, but I digress).......

anyway......I absolutely loved Band of Brothers. It captivated me in a way that SPR could never. And I feel that episode 6 alone is worth the price of the entire set. I love epic stories.....and the miniseries format was perfect for a story like BoB......It can take the time to tell parts of a story that would be axed from a theatrical film. The first episode takes its time to tell a part of the story that would probably be done in the pre-credits sequence of most modern films.....and the last episode or two are almost a coda or afterwards that would not be able to be told at all in a film. I guess I just love long stories.

but to answer the question, yes I would still recommend (and have many times) Band of Brothers even though I was not won over by Saving Private Ryan.

24 Seasons 1 and 2 (I thought 2 was better, but watch 1 first)
Family Guy
Clerks Uncensored (only $10 most places and HILARIOUS)

Libby 12-02-03 07:51 PM

X Men 4 disc digipak
Simpsons

I don't like Saving Private Ryan. Yeah, and because of that intense first 20 minutes, I lost my appetite watching the rest of the movie.

Generally I hate war movies, but surprisingly I love Band of Brothers. I thought it would be the same as SPR, but it is just different. It hooked me up all the way through. Love the characters, love the story, love the scores. The tin packaging is nice, the extras are great .. especially the Ron Livingston's Video Diary.

Highly recommended. (Now I am thinking to have it in my collection too)
