Why don't SE include Academy Award clips?

If a movie wins an Oscar for Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, or Screenplay, why not include the clips from the Oscars as a extra feature on a Special Edition disc?

Probably licensing issue.

The only DVD I've seen this on was The Godfather. I'd like to see it more often.

Shame the 'Spirited Away' R1 wasn't set to be released later as that would have been a nice feature to have included.

I suppose a lot of people interested in picking up 'Bowling For Columbine' would particularly like to see this feature as well

Why? Miyazaki wasn't there to accept the award.

The reason why no DVD includes Oscar acceptance speeches seems to be a rights issue with ABC. The only thing they are allowed to show are the backstage press conferences afterwards (the ones that are shown on E! and CNN ), those were the ones included in the Beautiful Mind DVD, not the acceptance speeches.

i've wondered about this before. i also think it's probably a licensing thing but it seems a shame not to include them considering they never play reruns of the show or anything.

Unfortunately, Paramount didn't include the clip of the "Native American" woman accepting the Best Actor award for Brando. Now THAT I'd like to see.

Read the fine print on the back of the DVD's: "Academy Awards and Oscar are registered trademarks," etc. etc. It is definitely a result of licensing issues that so few DVD's contain excerpts. Along the same lines you might wonder why so few DVD's contain clips from old Johnny Carson appearances. It can often be a difficult and/or expensive proposition to license these things. In the case of the Academy Awards, they may not license their broadcasts (the actual ceremonies, that is) at all. Or else it's so expensive that it's too ridiculous to even consider. I agree it would be cool, though.

Yeah, that sucked. Several years ago Blockbuster Video had a "Greatest Moments" VHS tape that featured a lot of famous things...including this speech, the streaker, and a lot more. I would love it if somebody would do that again.

I'm pretty sure A Beautiful Mind does have the acceptance sppech for Best Picture (with Grazer looking at the envelope and saying "that was close!"). Though I think they did skimp out on Connelly and maybe others with only press conference.

I too have wondered this before, and wish they could work it out somehow to have this included more often.

I thought that Sense and Sensibility had Emma Thompson's speech for Best Adapted Screenplay on the dvd.

From: You have moved into a dark place. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
ABC doesn't own the rights to the Oscars material - that's owned by the Academy itself.

There have been a few discs with acceptance speeches, but I have no idea what the licensing fees would be.

It's just a matter of studios choosing whether or not to pay for material they don't own. If it won't affect disc sales, they probably won't pony up for it.

You may as well ask "Why are there hardly ever third-party documentaries and interviews on DVDs?" They cost money.

Barnes & Noble or Waldenbooks sells a 3-disc collection of Oscar history. I picked it up, but have yet to view it. It cost like $20.00.

I would guess that in some cases the studio that is putting the DVD together doesn't share the personal views of the actor/director/whatever that made the speech.

buttmunker -

when you watch it let us know if they just have text or actual video footage.

I know from the past the show was not aired on television, but it would be nice if they had some video footage.

----

I have the Greatest Hits VHS. I remember getting it free when I bought my grandmother From Here to Eternity on VHS about 5 or 6 years ago.

The tape is for the years of 1971-1991 (films from 1970-1990).

It shows who won in the Best Actor, Actress, and Picture categories. While showing us the actor/actress category they either show a short clip from the actual movie the actor was in or a short clip of them accepting the Oscar (not the whole speech AND I DO MEAN SHORT). On rare occasions they may show both clips.

For the Best Picture segment they show a short clip of the film set to some of the different movie scores from those films.

The rest of the tape has different musical numbers, comedy routines from hosts, and the usual Memorial segment. Along with some other minor stuff.

I say go for it if you can get it cheap.

I am pretty sure that has nothing to do with it. It's a licensing issue.

Also from what I've read, the Bowling for Columbine dvd will only have a transcript and photos from the event and not the actual footage, probably for licencing issues.

It's 10-hours worth, so it may be awhile to report the what is there in its entirity - but, in a nutshell, it does show movie clips, but I'm not sure if it shows acceptance speeches. I'll let ya'all know.

I was just wondering this when watching the extras on the new Dances with Wolves SE. It won so many and there was so much
Oscar talk on the extras, it would've been nice to actually SEE some of the footage...

It has her brilliantly written Golden Globe acceptance speech, but not her Academy Award speech.

The Fox Movie Classics series has the Acadamy Awards speeches when applicable. Of course these were filmed as news pieces and shown in theaters before television. It is a great feature. I too have wondered about this and wish the Acadamy would allow these to be included on a regular basis.
