I want the Most Disappointing DVD's. That list is based on the merit of the film's themselves. I was thinking more in terms of the worst packaging, lamest excuse for special features (or lack thereof), most butchered transfer, worst instances of censorship, etc. This list would include DVD's like Better Off Dead that try to pass off the chapter stops as "special features" or David Lynch films that purposely lack extras, chapter stops, or normal volume levels.

I saw most of it last night. Besides that top three, I remember these, not in order though I'm sure:

BTTF
Die Hard
Star Wars II - though they made it more of an overall Star Wars vote, it seemed
Pulp Fiction
The James Bonds
The Jurassic Parks
Shrek
Silence of the Lambs
The Matrix
The Sixth Sense
The Rockys
Beauty and the Beast

#1 was The Godfather Box Set. IMO a very good choice.

The Rockys????? Rocky 1 is a very nice little DVD, but the others aren't. They're essentially features-less, and two of them are non-anamorphic. And Silence of the Lambs? Which release do they mean? They're both pretty solid DVD's but far from Top 25 material. The Criterion is non-anamorphic and 2.0 stereo, and the MGM SE, lacks a commentary. Red Dragon: Director's Edition would have been a much better choice. And Back to the Future should probably be nixed just for the framing debacle.

Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition should be number one. It has one of the single best audio and video presentations of any DVD period and about twice the special features as the Godfather Collection (especially if you got the collector's set which also came with the National Geographic disc). Anyone is going to be hard-pressed to top it unless they're willing to go High-def or release a 10-Disc set.

I thought the list was actually quite good, a lot of big name titles and not a lot of artsy fartsy niche crap.

It makes a perfect list to build a starter collection off of.

I wanted to get the list assembled so that I could then see exactly how many of the DVDs I could locate for free, online.

With all of the different clubs and free offers out there today, there's a very good chance I could get almost every single one of them.

All these lists seem to have the same DVDs. Most are very safe picks. I like the more esoteric lists.

Lord of the Rings with it's 5 different sets doesn't deserve ****! 5 damn sets in it's first year of release, that's over kill! You all whine and bitch about re-releases thru the years, yet, you're gaga over the treatment of LOTR.

While not the best movie, I like it thought its entertaining, how come noone ever mentions the Starship troopers:SE??
This dvd has possibly one of the best audio and video presentations Ive ever seen...
Especially the audio...the first time I watched it I was blown away..the use of the subwoofer and surrounds is amazing..
I wish all DVDs were like this one...

I think Donnie Darko and Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys had great releases and should have been on the list (if they weren't, I didn't see the program).

The best DVD of all time is Fight Club. That should have been number one.

Moulin Rouge was on the list, too.

The Rocky pick had to basically lean on the first one, same as Jurassic Park.

Five different sets? Are you serious? Are you that out of it? THere were TWO releases of the theatrical cut, one WS and the other FF. I wouldn't count those as two different releases b/c they both had the same content.

The second release was an extended edition, and that was made known MONTHS before the initial release. That EE was packaged in a gift set, and the release w/in that set was the exact one that was sold individually. So, by that count, there were only two releases with two options on each of those releases.

BTW, welcome to the forum...

We were given advance warning of the Extended edition. You didn't have to buy more than one release.

Hard to call it a re-release when you know in advance. You at least have the option that way.
