La Dolce Vita coming in September

Remember when the supervillians would team up in comic books? The Joker would meet up with The Riddler and they'd both plan to tag-team and kick Batman's ass?
That's the thought that comes to mind when I hear the term "Koch Lorber".

You know the thing with Fox Lorber...even though they didnt put much quality into their DVDs, at least they put them out...i mean, who else (besides 1 or 2 discs a year by Criterion) is going to release Godard's films, etc?
I know that it's important to have the best possible version available of a film, but i find it disgusting when people are so "snobbish" that they'll exclude an amazing movie from their library because its not OAR, or because its not Anamorphic, or because the colors are faded. The movie is what counts ya know?

here's hoping
As many have already stated, I too wish this film was going to be released by Criterion instead of Koch Lorber. Moreover, I am really getting tired of the word Lorber. I know it is the man's last name but still...Fox Lorber, Koch Lorber...enough of the Lorber already *sigh* Thinking of Fox Lorber, I keep picturing horrible transfers of Truffaut films. The fantastic Adventures of Antoine Doinel box set from Criterion is helping me to get rid of those bad Fox Lorber nightmares. Anyway, I hope the Koch Lorber "La Dolce Vita" disc will be quality. Regardless of quality, I will probably still pick it up because I really want an R1 release of this film. Still, a release of the film from Criterion would have been better. *hulka hugs his lavish two-disc set of 8 1/2 from Criterion to comfort him*

as for the transfer I think it would have made no difference: I guess Koch Lorber will use the recently restored italian edition - already available on DVD in R2 Italy - who was screened last week at the Cannes Festival.

Yes, the movie is what counts, but by shunning the bad discs we send a message to the companies releasing the films to take better care of the 'product.' I don't need special features, as long as the film itself is in OAR and in good condition.

Also, speaking for myself, I can often find much better versions of these films than what is available from Fox Lorber DVD... either via a DVD from another region, or on laserdisc, or sometimes even on VHS. There's no reason to settle for a terrible, lazy transfer or a hacked film that is not in the proper aspect ratio.

Can't wait for this DVD. Here's looking forward to it. . .it may be something special who knows?
BTW, does anyone know those 20-24 other titles the company was planning on releasing this year?

A month ago, I sent Koch Lorber the following detailed email:
I received the following reply:
Their website has no information, either. Most of the studios & distributors have already announced their September releases for pre-order, so unless we hear something soon, I don't think they're gonna make it.
As a dedicated DVD collector most interested in classic and independent film, I have read with interest about the founding of the Koch Lorber label, and its first release, The Ballad of Bering Strait. There has also been a lively discussion in the major online film and DVD discussion boards about the new label. Many of us, unfortunately, have bad memories of the words "Fox Lorber," since they came to symbolize substandard quality on DVD for many of our favorite films (witness the first release of Kurosawa's Ran, for instance). Some of this poor quality may have been due to the steep learning curve as a relatively small business ramped up its DVD production (New Yorker has experienced similar problems).
It has now been announced (in Variety) that Koch Lorber has acquired the rights to Federico Fellini's beloved La Dolce vita, (which has yet to receive a Region 1 release on DVD) and that you plan a September release. I know of many DVD aficionados who have purchased all-region players simply so that they could own this film on DVD (the Italian label Medusa released a highly acclaimed R2 version in February of this year). Have you set a release date? Are specs available? When can we expect details about this title?
Can you offer the online community of film lovers some assurance that Koch Lorber (in contrast to Fox Lorber) plans to adopt Criterion-like standards for quality and fidelity to the original film elements? That the Original Aspect Ratio will be honored? That care will be taken to use the finest film elements available, restored as necessary, and remastered judiciously to approximate the filmmaker's vision? That anamorphic enhancement will be provided where needed? That attention will be paid to accurate subtitling of foreign language films? That "extras" will truly be designed to enhance the viewing experience? Examples of releases from my own collection where these standards were met would include: Criterion's 8½, Children of Paradise, Brazil, The Adventures of Antoine Doinel box set, Grand Illusion, Wild Strawberries, Contempt, Rashomon, Do the Right Thing, The Passion of Joan of Arc, L'Avventura, Solaris, and In the Mood for Love (among many others); Miramax's recent Three Colors Trilogy; Fox's Sunrise; New Line's Boogie Nights.
I wish you good luck in this venture, and hope that we can expect great things from Koch Lorber.

If you've never seen the "cheesecake swimsuit cover" for Koch's abominable "Repulsion" DVD, you can check it out in the following DVDBEAVER comparison (scroll down a bit):
http://207.136.67.23/film/dvdcompare/repulsion.htm
I am certain that, in the past and future history of video releases, there will never, ever be a more laughably inappropriate cover. It's so utterly and completely absurd in its total incongruity with the subject matter of the film as to rank among the stupidest things I've ever seen in my life, anywhere and relating to anything. I'm simply flabbergasted by the idiocy it suggests, a cluelessness that transcends the usual vapid marketing techniques and reaches yet unplumbed depths of rank imbecility.
In other words, these aren't your average morons. There's a deeper pathology lurking here.

Richard, that was an admirable attempt to accurately convey the total atrocity that is the cover of Koch's Repulsion. You almost nailed it.
The La Dolce Vita cover is sure to depict Marcello Mastroianni dressed as a werewolf.
