How come they refuse to put out good movies in Superbit? Well Gattaca was good, but there's some stinkers fo sho.

DVD Polizei 05-18-03 04:37 AM

They are looking for the movies that grossed the most money, not which movies were good and had quality content.

Matty-O 05-18-03 06:18 AM

Starship Troopers is already one of the best looking dvd's out there. Unless it is going to be a Superbit Deluxe, why upgrade and lose out on some great extras?

Gdrlv 05-18-03 06:26 AM

While not a great movie, the Quick and the Dead could be a kick ass film to show off a home theater if the soundtrack was done well...cool visuals and sound effects.

matome 05-18-03 07:38 AM

Never got around to picking up The Quick and The Dead. Glad I waited.

I completely agree. This makes NO sense. But, who knows....

Now, The Quick and the Dead might be the one I'd get. This is one of Sam Raimi's films that's always under my radar.

Any word on an I Spy Superbit? Seriously, I wouldn't doubt it. They need to start putting better movies on Superbit.

I agree totally some of the choices are very odd. Imean Adaptation was a great film but why a Superbit title :hscratch:

Bad Boys or XXX I can understand since those movies really benefit from a great DTS track even though there not the best films ever made..

I'd like to see them pick better movies Like say "Heat" or "The Fugitive" as an example

I also know that Cameron is beginning work on a Titanic SE for release next year. I would love to see that as a "Deluxe Superbit" title I think it would be amazing!!

matome 05-18-03 09:26 AM

Superbits are from Columbia, so it's doubtful you'd see any of the titles you just listed since they're from different studios. However I know Columbia has rights to Universal titles over in Europe so there ARE Superbits from Universal over there (e.g. The Bone Collector), so who knows what'll happen one day?

shanester 05-18-03 09:34 AM

matome,

That explains the movie selection. I guess Columbia are running out of decent titles to showcase..:)

Personally I think the Superbit thing is over rated it's just a fancy name to dupe the public into thinking they're buying something better and louder!..

...Of course I'm one of those suckers who bought Das Boot and I must say it looks better and louder so there you go!

That doesn't seem to be the answer, because several of the superbit titles have mediocore (at best) box office grosses - John Capenter's Vampires for example, barely broke the $20 million mark.

Jason1973 05-18-03 10:27 AM

Maybe we should just all wait for HD-DVD ;)

SCHMEGGA 05-18-03 10:33 AM

I guess I will be skipping all of these. Nothing of interest to me.

The Dolby Digital track on both existing DVDs is very thin and weak, with next to no body in the mid-range of the audio spectrum. I will rebuy this one again in the hope that the DTS track sounds remotely closer to the PCM track on the laserdisc, which is much better than the Dolby Digital mix.

I'm not excited in the least about that or these titles.

Sunday Morning 05-18-03 02:25 PM

um... they actually make enough money on superbits to keep releasing them?

I don't want to wait 10 years. :)

llzackll 05-18-03 10:06 PM

Another Starship Troopers?? This will be at least the 3rd release of this film.

pro-bassoonist 05-18-03 10:13 PM

THE FISHER KING!!!!

....when?

Dean Walsh 05-18-03 10:41 PM

I agree with Josh Z on Starship Troopers, the PCM cranked... bring on the Superbit I say!!!

Yup... My biggest complaint with the Superbit line... Lame flicks. But, I'll see your Gattaca and raise you a CTHD and a Das Boot. Other than that and the upcoming Adaption and Punch-Drunk Love, which may or may not be "true" Superbits (see Panic Room), my interest is at a minimum... The majority of these titles do not impress IMHO.

Bill Geiger 05-18-03 11:56 PM

The following from Columbia/Tr-Star..regardless if you like em or not, could definitely benefit in the DTS sound and/or picture quality better than those listed for scheduled Superbit release.

6th Day (DTS in Korea)
Brainscan
Cliffhanger
Formula 51 (DTS in Korea)
Ghostbusters
Jumanji
Last Action Hero (Superbit in Japan)
Leon, The Professional
Replacement Killers
Run Lola Run (DTS in Germany)
Thunderheart

eau 05-19-03 01:40 AM

Yeah, I would love to see Leon The Professional on Superbit.

I agree, the DVD's never seemed to match the dramic dynamic range the laserdis has, oh I can't wait for this film to finally have a DTS track... lets see I think this is the fourth time I have bought this title on home video.

The "Quick and the Dead" should be pretty cool with a DTS track, I remember the soundtrack in the theatre and the SDDS soundmix was amazing.

(fingers thumping top of table): I'm still waiting for:

The Messenger: Story of Joan of Arc
Godzilla
