I've never heard Cronenberg do a commentary. Should be cool to hear him talk about this film. I only got to see it once and it's one that begs for repeat viewings.

Good news. The best film of 2002 on dvd.
Monkey--
cronie did a commentary (as well as 2 other separate tracks by his collaborators) for the canadian dvd version of "eXistenZ"-- It was eXcellent. Cronie is of course very intelligent and has very interesting things to say. I am very much looking forward to the commentary track for Spider.

I'm aware that he's done commentaires, I just haven't heard any. I kind of thought eXistenZ sucked, so I haven't rented it to hear the commentary. Dead Ringers would be good though, I just haven't gotten around to it.

Excellent news!
It ran here in Denver for about 4 hours and then hit the road...wtf?
I am really looking forward to catching this on dvd.
Will the world ever accept Cronenberg? Spider's short theatrical run is maddening!

I can't wait to see this! Buying it blind.....most critics raved about it saying its his best work to date...guess it just didn't have the marketing behind it to make it a commercial success.

I was very interested in seeing this as I like Cronenberg and had enjoyed the novel but it must have had a micro run here in SD because I wasn't aware that it showed. I'll probably pick this up.

Ugh... I'd avoid buying this blind despite what the critics say. Even more so if your just a Cronenberg fan. Lacks almost all of his direction that he's known for and is an average picture if best IMHO. Then there's the horrid pacing of the of the film. I sure wish I waited to rent this on DVD instead of catching it full price at the BO.

Heliosphann,
Thanks for the warning. Hence, I'll give it a rent. I was tempted to blind buy due to the great reviews but the subject matter and pacing is what concerns me.

Cronenberg is one of the few directors I will "collect" (Mario Bava and Takeshi Kitano are two others). This doesn't mean I'll obsessively seek out all versions of each film, just that I'd like to have one nice copy of each.
So I'll be getting it, even if it's not his best.

Its not typicaly Cronenberg but its still a good film in its own right, even if it tends to be a bit too Freudian. There's a thread in the Movietalk section if you want to find out more. I didn't have a problem with the pacing either.
Ok, here's the link but there are spoilers there:

Got it at BB last night and watched it.
It's certainly one of Cronenberg's best, in my opinion. And it most certainly IS a typically Cronenberg movie. It may not have all the clear gooey pus-bags, but at it's heart it's an existential film. And Cronenberg (a self-proclaimed "card-carrying existentialist") has been dealing with these same themes in every single movie since his earliest work.
I loved Spider, and I hope Cronenberg keeps it up with this high level of quality for a long time.
I hope to check out the commentary this weekend.

Are there more than one version of Spider in R1? I seem to be getting conflicting info as to whether it has a DTS soundtrack.
Even the DVDTalk review lists it as DD5.1 only, as do many of the e-tailers.
Thanks guys.
