Anamorphic - Only in Canada?

I was just about to buy The English Patient, but I read that only the Canadian version is anamorphic. I guess I'll order off amazon.ca.

Are there any other titles I should know about that are non-anamorphic in the US but got an anamorphic release in Canada?

I have the Canadian (Alliance Atlantis) version of The English Patient it's not anamorphic . It has the exact same transfer as the U.S. Miramax disc.

Well I don't know what version you have but I have the Canadian Alliance Atlantis version too and it is most definitely anamorphic. The EAN is 65935-22710. Maybe you have an earlier release or something?

I could be wrong but I believe Ginger Snaps is anamorphic only in Canada... plus has a bunch of extras not on the US version. Once I learned this, I wanted it so much and finally it's mine! (cuddling disc and making yummy noises)

I bought my copy when it was first released. I no longer have the original case, only the disc itself ( It's a long story ) Does your anamorphic copy have bilingual packaging?

I got mine August last year. It has a reversible cover which is entirely English on one side and entirely French on the other (same with the insert). Disk has the English front cover printed onto it.

Yeah! English only cover similar to the one pictured below, but it also had a small white rectangle with red lettering printed on the cover. I'm don't remember the reversible French cover though.

Does your copy have 16x9 or anamorphic listed on the back cover?

Nope. It's misprinted as 1.85:1 Letterbox.

So now I'm confused. Is the English Patient anamorphic in Canada or is the whole discussion above about Good Will Hunting? Yes, I checked the canadian exclusive DVD thread and found nothing to substantiate that EP is anamorphic but just want to be sure.

Is the commentary track & making of documentary listed on the back of the case? That's the only way I'll be able to tell them apart.

Snapper case??? WTF! I've never seen an Alliance release in a snapper.

!@#$%^ Alliance Atlantis

For the English Patient or for Good Will Hunting?

I don't own the English Patient. If you want me to scan the cover of Good Will Hunting to show you, just say It does advertise the www.alliance.ca website on the back and yes, it does list the commentary track as a special feature

I know Miramax is supposedly releasing the English Patient SE sometime. Does anyone know when (I thought sometime this year)? Do you think it'd be wise to pick up the English Patient Canadian anamorphic version with another version coming sometime (soon?). I would have done so sooner had I known it was anamorphic but I don't really want to double dip. I've done that too many times before. I will again though if the release is a year or more away.

I think I'll just order the Candian version of The English Patient and get back to you. Looks like at worst it's the same tranfer as Miramax.

All the talk regarding a special edition has been just that...TALK. I agree that the English Patient is a high profile production that deserves a Vista treatment however am I not sure it will happen any time soon (I hope I am wrong).

Same is the case with the HORSE WHISPERER...only a "talk" regarding a special edition. A good one came out in R4 (if I could recall correctly).

Just got the Alliance version of English Patient from Amazon.ca in the mail today, and it is most definitely *NOT* anamorphic. I assume that it's the same as the Miramax transfer.

Oh well, nothing ventured...

The Canadian "Ginger Snaps" is SO much better than the US version. If anyone else really likes this movie too, snag one off Ebay. You won't be sorry.

Just a quick follow-up on the English Patient DVD. The Canadian version actually says "Widescreen 2.35:1" on the case.

Now, if you play the movie in "Full" mode, it does kind of look like anamorphic 2.35:1, except that everyone is short and fat. It's actually 1.85:1 non-anamorphic.

Somebody just wasn't paying attention when they designed the cover.
