Paramount DVD Covers

Why did Paramount take it's 'Widescreen Collection' logo and move it from the bottom of the DVD cover, where it had been for 3 years, and move it to the top of the DVD cover? I just want one good reason.

who knows...maybe just for something different

D-Ball 04-25-03 02:01 PM

I liked it better on the bottom. I don't know why it was moved to the top. But I'm guessing that it makes the Paramount banner more visible on store shelves.

Since putting it at the top makes it more noticable, maybe we should be thanking them for trying to push OAR releases.

Yes, it annoyed me (at the time) that they moved the banner.
Inconsistencies like that don't look good on our shelves. Thank goodness for custom cover artwork.

Probably just to tick off us "completists" who are in the minority of their overall dvd sales. Paramount has been doing this a lot in the last few years.

I think it's because when you flick through those CD-style storage/display racks (front to back, like Suncoast, as opposed to left to right, like Best Buy), it helps minimize consumer confusion that leads to Joe-Sixpack accidentally buying "one of them thar DVDs with them thar damnable black bahrs on 'em"--this way, they can see what they'd be getting before they even pull a title out of the rack...

Most of the time if not all of the time (with the exception of new titles) all paramount discs are either oar only or at least widescreen only, so there are hardly any full frame paramount discs.

Filmmaker 04-26-03 05:48 PM

But they do exist (e.g. CHARLOTTE'S WEB)...

PatrickMcCart 04-27-03 10:08 PM

Charlotte's Web has both widescreen and open matte DVDs.

Paramount is one of the only studios to not do a P&S-only DVD.

JoeyOhhhh 04-27-03 10:15 PM

Grease comes in Both, as does Four Feathers.

Filmmaker 04-28-03 03:30 PM

Just for clarification, I do realize that there was a widescreen version of CHARLOTTE'S WEB released--I only mean to make the point that, as long as there is a single Paramount title offered in a format other than widescreen, then my conjectured reason behind moving the "Widescreen" banner to the top becomes clear...

jough 04-28-03 06:08 PM

You're all assuming that Paramount had a plan and a good reason for moving the banner. Could it be that they simply wanted to differentiate the newer releases from the older releases?

Especially now that they've begun to re-release some of their older titles (but where's my Top Gun: SE, Paramount? WHERE?).
