hello everybody,long-time reader first-time poster.
i was wondering how other collecters grouped their dvds.
i've just put up new shelfs and have over 250 dvds, and was wondering how to group them, for example i've got silence of the lambs CC but i've put them with the other CCs,or should i put them with the other lecters?
any ideas?
Alphabetical after director followed by release year.

Me? Alphabetical all the way. Special consideration to genuine sequels (Die Hards, Bill & Teds), which I group together. Stuff with actors repeating roles which aren't in a genuine series (don't argue with me, I like my odd ways), like the View Askew films and the Hannibal films, I group seperately, in alphabetical order like the rest of my films.
Yes, do it however you want to do it.

Me: strictly classical alphabetic (numbers spelled out), like the way Leonard Maltin has his movie book. Sequels only go together if they're next to each other alphabetically. Star Trek III comes before Star Trek II, for example.

The only exception is that I had to separate snapper cases from keepcases a while ago. Mixing them as I had been doing became too much of a problem.
I used to do it chronologically, and alphabetically within year. Lately I've bought some box-sets (Three Colors, and the Carl Dreyer set), which isn't conducive to that system, so I switched to alphabetically by director, and then chronologically. TV series go at the end, chronologically by first year on the air.
I place mine by spine color, then by if they're anamorphic or not, then by the secondary actors' last names.
I used to organize them by feature length, but then I added ID4 with the seamless branching and got confused.

So now, I just sort them alphabetically. For simplicity, I use DVD Profiler's sort order as my guide. (e.g. '12 Angry Men' is before the A's, 'Six Days, Seven Nights' is in the S's)
Alpha by title with sequels in order of release - Lost World is between Jurassic Park 1 & 3 instead of under L. All titles with number are before the A's and of course are in numerical order. Basically it's in DVD Profiler order though I had a time convincing it that 101 Dalmations should go after 40 Days & 40 Nights, not before.

I tried alpha by director but got confused when I wanted to keep sequels together - De Plama directing M:I and Woo directing M:I2.
Wendersfan, do you just seperate sequels?
I keep it simple. I organize by genre and/or director only. mostly genre with one shelf dedicated to oddball titles.
all alphabetically in these categories

tins
box sets
TV sets
cardboard cases( fight club 2 disc)
snappers
keepcase

I don't own any sequels. Off the top of my head the only sequels I would buy would be Godfather II (part of the box-set, so no separation) and Faraway, So Close (sequel to Wings of Desire). Chronologically, Until the End of the World comes between them, but it's not on DVD, so the question is currently moot.
By genre is the way to go, imo. It makes sense to me since I pick movies based on the genre I'm in the mood for at a given point.
chronilogically by the age of the assistant lighting specialist.

youngest to oldest of course.

if there is a tie, throw the 2 dvds out because there is no solution to fix this problem.
Alpha here also...except for some sequels (Friday/Next Friday/Friday after next are all together). Friday the 13th may go together if i ever decide to buy the Paramount DVD's

number are at the front too....8-mile, 2001, etc....

I almost put my Superbits together, but nope.....

Dude, c'mon. It should be by caterer!
yeah, like that makes sense. who the hell knows the caterer for every movie?
