Me, it would have to be the $208 I just shelled out for the nine disk Macross TV set.
Ditto, although I bought mine about a year ago (so it's in the complete box). I have some other stuff (Cowboy Bebop box, Escaflowne box, Trigun box, Tylor box, Berserk box, etc.) but none were as expensive. I only list anime boxes because those are always more expensive than the regular box sets.

I bought the first 4 seasons of the X-Files, for an average of about $100 each. I eventually sold them realizing that I really couldn't afford another $500 to complete the set.

For me, its the WORLD AT WAR boxset at about $110. But the Monty Python boxset I have my eyes on will run me more.

That would be my Monty Python's Complete Flying Circus (14 DVD) box set. The cost to Finland was, taking in account taxes, customs and postages, around 185 euros / dollars.

"It's..."

...Monty Python's Flying Circus and its's worth every cent.

Ouch. There are lots of those boxes available in Scandinavia, without forced subtitles. They aren't selling too well here, so I picked my copy up for 39 euros / dollars in the largest department store in Helsinki. They still stock it. It is also one of the most exported items from Finnish online retailers, the normal list price being 49 euros / dollars (it launched at this price).

Of course I realize that part of the excitement for a movie collector comes from owning precisely the rare edition of a movie. Still, besides the optional subtitles and different cover art, the set is same and serves me well.

It looks like this here:

Cowboy Bebop: Perfect Sessions $158

I have quite a few expensive sets (unfortunate for my wallet) ;(, but that's the most expensive set.

I am assuming you didn't mean series such as ST:TNG so I would have to say my:
Baseball: Ken Burns
Jazz: Ken Burns
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Set

would have to be mine. They were all about the same price MSRP, but I paid the most for the Gundam one.
