Great widescreen anamorphic B&W DVDs?
 

Hey, I just got a widescreen TV, and now I'm going through my collection and enjoying all my 16:9 enhanced discs. One thing I really enjoy is seeing a sharp widescreen black and white picture. I know that widescreen films were just entering their heyday as black and white was fading in popularity, but I'm looking for other examples of these. In my collection now I have:

--Zatoichi 1 and 2
--The Hidden Fortress
--Curse of the Demon
--Invasion of the Body Snatchers
--The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

I think the 1963 version of The Haunting is on its way, so I'll be picking up that one when its released.

Any other recommendations for enhanced widescreen B & W DVDs?

Not available in the US however you could get the R2/4 release I have provided a link for. The most stunning film I have seen in years...visually it is breathtaking.

For the love of God...if you're not single...get this movie for both you and your significant other. You will thank me later. Soundtrack, acting, design, camera work.....SO DEEP AND TOUCHY!

Agreed. The black and white is beautiful in this one.

City of the Dead (aka Horror Hotel, but ONLY the VCI special edition - mind-bogglingly great picture, possibly the best I've ever seen)
The Crawling Eye (aka The Trollenberg Terror)

The Elephant Man is a beautiful transfer. Some extra grain and dirt exists, but it's all stuff built into the negative from optical shots. An excellent DVD by all means.

Also, A Hard Day's Night: Collector's Edition (Miramax) is superb. The first reel had to be taken from an interpositive (still great looking) while the rest are mostly from the original negative (I think some of the last reel came from the IP).

8 1/2: Criterion Collection is also a superb B&W transfer. The transfer came from the restored version of the film and is wonderful. Aside from a handful of scratches and one bad splice, it's flawless.

All three of these have excellent picture qualities and also video transfers.

If you WANT B & W there is "A Night to Remember" (Titanic). I prefer color because I didn't have it until I was 18 years old, I **had** to watch crappy B & W, they didn't make in *color*, you purests could then turn off the color!:(

These Woody Allen films are B&W, and as far as I know, the DVDs are anamorphic:

...Besson's first feature "Le dernier combat"... well. at least the anamorphic French R2 DVD is pretty stunning... also: no problem with subtitles, as nobody in that movie speaks... and I'll second "The Girl On The Bridge" (French R2)... and the Italian "La dolce vita"... it's good to be able to play R2 DVDs...!...

Down By Law--Criterion Collection.

I'm copying down all these titles on what *not* to buy, since unlike you all like what I was forced to watch for 18 years I didn't have a choice. This has nothing do do with my being a home bound cripple!
I have waited al my life for great color and sound and you B & W geeks can have it your way and I will have my way. I will go to any region to get what I want, if its colorized I will buy it along with my other colorized movies that I buy instead of crappy Black and white.

Everybody has their own choice and this is mine, some of you helped trash 2 of my posts on what I thought. I won't post again for the same will attack wthout mercy. I will however respond as I am a avid *buyer* and user of DVD discs. I buy from regions 1, 2, and 4, I have the equipment needed to *enjoy* my life in my apartment.

Nope, unless there is a new release beyond the 2001 issue. It changes ARs throughout and is presented full-frame/letterboxed as appropriate.

Ok, maybe this will work this time. Just one film to add:

- Kafka, mostly shot in black and white. Not a great film, but I think it's pretty good.
