The Man Who Wasn't There - Newest Coen brothers movie
High and Low - One of Kurosawa's best Raging Bull is partially black and white. This desperately needs re-released in an SE though. |
Since you mentioned Zatoichi in your original post I would reccommend Zatoichi meets Yojimbo even though its not black and white. It recently got released by animeigo and its my favorite zatoichi movie.

RETURN OF THE FLY
Interesting that the original film was shot in CinemaScope and color, but the sequels were shot in CinemaScope and black and white. CURSE OF THE FLY isn't on DVD at this point, but RETURN is paired with the original on a double feature DVD which is now reduced to under $10 at many stores. |
Originally posted by Chris Camfield Kafka, mostly shot in black and white. Not a great film, but I think it's pretty good. |
I'd be all over this, especially if it would feature a Soderbergh commentary. Yum.

Rypro,
I haven't picked this one up yet, but am planning to. What's so bad about the transfer? |

Hey, thanks for all the responses, everyone---you've given me some things to keep an eye out for. I also just noticed another in my collection--Hammer's The Abominable Snowman.
Also, I see that 3:10 to Yuma is scheduled for release---cool. |

Originally posted by danol I'm copying down all these titles on what *not* to buy, since unlike you all like what I was forced to watch for 18 years I didn't have a choice. YOUR LOSS. You're not the only one who grew up with black and white. I had a small B&W television that didn't get replaced with a color TV until I was about 17. That'll never make me pass up the vast amount of classic films out there simply because they're not in color! Don't forget, danno, that we're trying to mention the GOOD ones, specifically the good anamorphic widescreen ones. I also find it interesting (but perhaps not unexpected) that many of the movies mentioned are more recent films specifically chosen to be filmed in black and white, rather than older films. *sigh* Kids today... :) I wish Universal would re-release To Kill a Mockingbird in anamorphic. |
Oh, speaking of Woody Allen, "Celebrity" is anamorphic, too (I *think*).

Just got through watching The Loney Man and thought it looked great. 1957 western.
