"Watch out for snakes"

With the release of the third Mystery Science Theater 3000 box set, I have been wondering about the future of this series on DVD. I believe there are only 2 episodes currently available on VHS but not DVD. After these come out, will the releases come to a hault? Or will Rhino begin releasing episodes that have never been on home video before? I know there are many episodes we have no chance of ever seeing (due to rights issues), but aren't there still a good number that have the potential to be released?

Here is the list of MST3K episodes currently available on DVD:

106 - The Crawling Hand
202 - The Sidehackers
204 - Catalina Caper
209 - The Hellcats
301 - Cave Dwellers
303 - Pod People
320 - The Unearthly + Posture Pals + Appreciating Our Parents
424 - Manos, the Hands of Fate + Hired! (Part 2)
506 - Eegah!
507 - I Accuse My Parents

513 - The Brain That Wouldn't Die

607 - Bloodlust + Uncle Jim's Dairy Farm
609 - The Skydivers + Why Study Industrial Arts
619 - Red Zone Cuba + Speech: Posture & Appearance
622 - Angels' Revenge

The Shorts Volume 1

I doubt that Rhino will be able to obtain rights to all these movies. I suggest going to www.dapcentral.org ... they're a group that is digitally archiving MST3K episodes... and reading their FAQ.

I'm sure Rhino will release a ton of the Sci-Fi channel episodes once Sci-Fi lets them.

On the most recent news at mst3kinfo.com it says no more Rhino MST3K DVD releases are planned for this year, even though Gunslinger is still out on VHS only. It says Rhino is looking into aquiring rights to more for 2003, so we can only hope. I hope the current sets sold well enough that Rhino sees the potential.

You can still get the other episodes that arent released through other sources. They are pretty good quality and they'll likley never get an official release. Besides, they said keep circulating those tapes! That could include dvds i guess.

I would love to see MST3K Godzilla and Gamera sets, but I'm sure that Toho and Daiei won't let that happen (especially Toho).

K00 - The Green Slime
K01 - Invaders from the Deep
K02 - Revenge of the Mysterons
K03 - Star Force: Fugitive Alien 2

These will probably never be seen. No fan copies are known to exist. Everything else not put out by Rhino and a bunch of specials can be downloaded. Check out www.dapcentral.org for the details. Read their FAQ and you can learn how to complete your MST3K collection.

Hopefully Rhino can release more DVDs in the future, but this is better than nothing.

I never really saw many of the Comedy Central episodes. I barely remember what Joel even looks like.

I know a lot of the episodes are prevented from being released by rights issues, but what I don't understand is that there are a number of movies that were used that are currently available as public domain-sourced DVD releases, such as "Swamp Diamonds", "The Giant Gila Monster", "Tormented" and so on. If anyone can put these movies out on disc, why cant Rhino?

It might have to do with the network that originally showed maybe still having syndication rights. The movie itself may be PD, but the MSTing of it is copyright-able.

I believe this is the truth of it. Sandy Frank owns the rights to almost all of the Japanese movies they did like Godzilla and Gamera because they used the syndicated versions. Getting those rights back is now pretty much impossible.

Any chance the MSTing side was recorded seperate, and could be 'tossed' on top of the public domain version?

(Farfetched, and likely sounding dumb, but hope is eternal for this MST3k fan)

Problem with that, as I understand it, is SCIFI doesn't even own all of the SCIFI episodes. I know 'DIABOLIK' has recently been added to the list of one's they've lost the rights to.

This is true and very confusing considering they were using the Sci-Fi library to get episodes. I guess Sci-Fi only had the rights to many of the movies for a limited time.

Considering Toho won't let Columbia Tristar release regular versions of the Big G movies, I think it will be cold day in you know where before we see the MSTy versions.

Sigh. You're probably right about not getting Godzilla vs. Gamera anytime soon. Well, with my top choice gone, I'd want:

522 - Teen-age Crime Wave
421 - Monster a-Go Go
601 - Girls Town
602 - Invasion USA

Hey look, I just designed Volume 4! Rhino, are you listening?

Bumping old thread.

We haven't had much MST3K talk around here lately. Has anyone heard any info or rumors about a possible Volume 4?

The last I heard was that Rhino was done for 2003, then not too long ago something changed and they have something interesting planned for 4th Qtr. No clue as to what.

Just to note this from the MST3K info club.
RHINO PLANS "EXCITING" DVD RELEASE
The good folks at Rhino Home Video have apparently rethought their plans for MST3K this year. They now tell us they are planning an "exciting" DVD release for the fourth quarter of 2003. The plans are still in their very early stages, so we have no information on what will be on the DVD or when exactly it will be released. As we receive more info, we'll be sure to pass it along. Stay tuned!

going by the "exciting 4th quarter release" it could be:

1) Rhino got the rights to the Sci-Fi library

2)Laserblast

3)a seasonal set, including Santa Clause Vs. the Martians (drool)

4) Mst3K the movie, SE (have no idea about the rights issue)

I would consider any and all new MST3k DVDs exciting, but they never said that about any of their other past releases, so maybe it would be something truely BIG. (maybe The Amazing Collosal Man back in print?)

What do yo guys think?
