Obviously, the only reason anyone would ever buy a used DVD is because of the cheaper price.
However, I've found that with discounts and coupons, a brand new disc is often not much more than a used disc at BB or HV. YMMV.
So really, the only used discs I've bought have been from Ebay. My experience has been mixed with those. Sometimes they're pristine and other times... woof!

It never even occurred to me that they were cheaper. Yeah, I suppose they are.

The Family Video near me lets me go through all the discs and pick which one I want...plus they seal the keep cases immediately for the frontage display so you get a new case/insert with any disc.....ten bucks out the door works for me - especially with titles that CH doesn't carry....

I buy used from BBV because every single one I have purchased has been in excellent condition, and included the insert/booklet. I'd much rather pay $20-$25 for two/three(if buy 2 get 1 free) instead of $40 new,
Besides, the Blockbusters in my area leave everything intact, ie they don't swap into store DVD/game cases.

I'd just like to know what the heck people are doing with these discs to scratch them up so much badly. Are they using them to play shuffleboard on a sidewalk?
Speaking of used discs on Ebay, I check occasionally for titles but usually end up amazed that people end up paying so much for the used while DeepDiscount has the DVD brand spanking new for the same price or less!

Same price or less than on Ebay?
Admittedly, some sellers ask a ridiculous amount for their discs, but if you're looking for older titles that haven't price-dropped yet (by "older" I mean simply not the hot new release - Monster's, Inc. would be an "older" title by my meaning) you can get a number of brand new discs for less than $10 shipped - often half or at least several dollars off what DDD would sell them for.
So by shopping on Ebay essentially every third disc you buy is free.
BUT - you have to find the deals. They're out there, but it takes a little bit of work to find them. Look for discs that are "glutted" on ebay - where there's 1,000 of them all for sale at the same time, often starting at $0.99 - sometimes you can win the bid for as little as $2-3 and then shipping is usually a very high $4-5 (and they'll ship media mail, too, which rarely costs more than $1.50, but the extra shipping charge is for "handling").
In any case, I bought the Pulp Fiction CE for about $8.00 shipped. Not too shabby. The cheapest I've seen it retail was $15.00.
And that was brand new. "Previously viewed" discs you can sometimes get cheaper.
I have a rather large list of discs that I want to buy - so that helps - you have to take the deals that you can find, not necessarily get any disc at any time for a relative steal.

Most of you are talking about buying useds discs stores you can drive to. There is a blockbuster about 2.5 miles from where I live, but it my as well be on the moon as my slow 4.5 MPH disabled scooter can't reach it.
I buy used DVD discs online from amazon or half.com from resellers, I have no other choice for I don't own a car. I just received a Eddie and the Cruisers 2: Eddie Lives Vhs tape, should the better then original, never make it to disc. I buy a lot of OOP discs to save money and get 2 used discs for the price of one new disc with the wrapping on.
If it doesn't play I ask that I be sent another one or credit my CCard. To find another buyer who has a playable disc,
I would say that I have bought 100+ used and am happy with both the discs and the savings. I have just started my 3rd 300 + 1 Sony Changer with 8 in it.

I am a little more selective of the titles I purchase PPV. I usually buy used if it is a movie I sorta like and I don't mind paying a few bucks for. (As long as it is in good playable condition) Other than that, I purchase it new/sealed if it is a movie I enjoy alot more.

I can ether go to BlockBuster and rent a movie for 4 or 5 bucks with scratches or I can buy a used or brand new DVDs at my local pawn shop for 8-12 bucks,8 for used,10 for new unopened discs or 12 for new double disc, now even if I only watch the movie twice its worth it,and if I buy a disc that I dont like I watch it once then sell it for half price,it comes out to be the same as a rental price,IMO only sheep go to BlockBuster, support your mom & pop rentals before you go to BB.
And another thing im a widescreen freak so BlockBuster is out of the question since they only get full screens versions in,at least at my local BB's,plus they love to charge you late fee's even if your rentals are on time, they have lost so much money there charging late fee's to random custumers, how do I know this my best freind works there and he even told me the place is garbage.

Here's my question: why not buy used?
Columbia House is "great" if you like run-of-the-mill, typical Hollywood "garbaggio" and if you're willing to wait months to get your orders. Anytime I've ever considered that "deal," I had to seriously struggle to find discs to fill out my order. Totally not worth the hassle.
Besides there's a ton of used disc shops in any major metropolitan area that sell mint condition discs for fractions of the cost of new discs - usually within days of their release.

I've given up on the BB PVD because of all the stickers and crappy cases. I've only had a couple problems with playability and the disc was replaced. I now buy mine from a private store for $10 each. Never had a problem, in fact they look pristine. I can trade them in later for $6 credit so I consider the $4 difference a long term rental. Some I've even bought and returned months later unopened and they'll give me full credit. The only new I buy is when I have GC for presents or a sale is so close I'll pay the couple extra bucks for a new one. I did CH once, but I tend to have most everything on their list.

I usually don't buy previously viewed discs because I can get the same disc new for what BB charges for a used disc.

I have a network of 5 pawn shop owners who are working my want list. I have picked up the following excellent deals:
X-Files 1 - $30
X-Files 3 - $35
X-Files 4 - $35
Sopranos 2 - $25
MST3K Movie - $8
Spartacus Criterion - $10
Now I also get other good deals but those come from the recent hits that get pawned the next payday. I pay $5-10 for most disc.

I've picked up a ton of used dvds from a semi-local place - previous rentals 2/$15, and used dvds have ranged in price from 4.99 and up.
As many others have mentioned in replacement threads, I can spend a couple minutes and have the disk looking as good as new. The place leaves the case, insert, everything with the dvd, and only once have I recieved a disk less than mint - a cracked Majestic. I replaced it a couple days later (the place is 45 minutes away, but luckily on the way 'home')
XFiles 5 & 6, $60
Charade CC 12.99
Dead Ringers CC 12.99
24 Season 1 24.99
and just a lot of other pretty good deals, esp the occasional Anchor Bay LE or other OOP find.
