Family Guy Seasons 1 and 2--Do you think people worried too much about quality?

I can see where it seems a little jagged and stuff in a lot of parts but this is way better than what I'm used to watching, and it doesn't bother me. It's not nearly as bad as South Park Season 1 was, I'm actually happy with my set. But that's just my own opinion, what do you guys think? Were people being too picky and jumping to conclusions? Or are you content with your set? Can't wait to see what you guys have for feedback.

Well, it ain't like it's Lawrence of Arabia or nuthin'.

Don't get me wrong, I love the show, but seriously, the animation is pretty crappy to begin with, and I heard that the master tapes were crap as well, so whadda people expect? Be happy with the funny!

Please point out a specific point where these jagged bits are..

I've watched about half of disc one and haven't really seen anything wrong..

I cancelled my preorder for this from Amazon based on the reviews. I have the UK Season One and Two sets, so I was buying this for the commentary, promos and possible upgrade in quality. From the reviews, it seems it was sourced from the same masters as the UK set, which I was happy with to begin with.

This has long been my number 1 wanted on DVD since I got into DVD, and the day I heard that it got announced for DVD I was extatic (sp?)

Well then the reviews started comming in, and I lost all interest, I was pissed because all the reviews said it was such a terrible transfer...

Well, today came and I realized I don't care I love this show too much not to buy it I broke down and got it.

All I can say is my extreme dissatisfaction on the behalf of the REVIEWERS. Much like South Park (which got horrible reviews on transfer) I broke down and bought it and in reality it is not that bad. It is definately noticable lots of shimmers in busy places with lots of lines and whatnot, but by no means anywhere as bad as reviewers are claiming.

I think the problem lies within the reviewers, even though they are doing their job by pointing out the flaws, i think they need to emphasize the fact that its no where near unwatchable, which is what they make it sound like.

In the end if you love this show, DEFINATELY GET IT. Once you start watching an episode you forget to watch for bad transfers, and its worth it to own this amazing show on DVD.

My 3 Cents.

I'm disappointed that there are problems with the quality, but it's not going to keep me from getting it.

I love "The Family Guy", but I'm still on the fence.

I watched an episode today. Definitely noticed the flaws, but after watching these things on my computer, anything is an improvement. And I really am not concerned with picture quality when I can get hour after hour of Peter Griffin.

Interesting cases though, I must say that. Overall, I'm very happy with the set.

Maybe it's my crappy Toshiba SD4700's deinterlacer that's doing it, but the video on the first two episodes looks intermittently awful. I can live with it but it's really bad. Hands-down the worst looking DVD I own.

This is on a well-tuned Sony 53" RP TV. Denon DVD2900 is forthcoming!

Compared to Family Guy, South Park looks like Attack of the Clones. But with a better plot

Nope, which leads me to believe they used the same masters for both the UK and the US sets. Here is the excerpt from http://www.planet-familyguy.com

UK: Road to Rhode Island Cut
Wednesday, January 29, 2003

The episode "Road to Rhode Island" on the recently released series 2 DVD (region 2) appears to have been cut slightly. The Bin Laden scene is missing. This is a likely consequence of 9/11. According to the BBFC no cuts were made to the episode, so it must have been cut State side from the original.

Otherwise the episodes appear uncut on this release. It has been rumoured that the missing scene may feature as a deleted scene on the future release of the third series, out this April.

(The Season 3 UK release was pushed back to May)

Btw, you can purchase the Family Guy Plush Toys Collection from this site for $70 including shipping and handling. I'm on the fence about these, but they are very tempting!

Then you'll never notice... Carry on...

I watched episodes 1 thru 4 last night... The first episode, Death Has A Shadow, ranged from bad to really bad to awful with the jaggies. The next 3 episodes looked better but were sporadic with the jaggies. Episode 2 looked decent to pretty good, episode 3 has some bad jaggies - not as bad as episode 1 however - and episode 4 looked about the same as episode 2. Certainly not as terrible as some of the reviews that I've read but this set definitely has some jaggie issues. The show did not have these problems when it aired, I don't care what the folks at Fox say about the masters...

Now, all that said, if you love the show go ahead and pick it up - if you can find it *. It's damn_nice to have these at all, even with the transfer issues and the crappy packaging that Fox gave it.

I also suspect that the gear that one watches these on will influence your perception of the transfer. I watched these on a 36" 4X3 Panny tube thru an old Sony 330 via s-video. I have yet to play them on my 47" 16X9 via progressive scan... I suspect they will look better or worse, not sure which, on that rig...

* These sets are selling out everywhere... My Best Buy had 50 copies yesterday and they were gone by 3:00. It's currently #3 on the Amazon best sellers list... Note to Fox - this show, as you can see by the DVD sales, has quite a following... You guys screwed up - as usual - when you cancelled it.

I respectfully disagree. I noticed the jagged lines when the show originally aired, and the same jagged lines show up on my VHS recordings of the show. DVD has perhaps made the jagged lines easier to see in certain spots, but they were always there.

Okey dokey... I don't recall it looking as crappy as it does now but I'll take your word for it... Yes, I would say that DVD has definitely made it easier to notice...

I bought the set yesterday and it's looked just fine after watching it on two different DVD players. Today, we watched a couple episodes in my newspaper class on one of the iMacs and the jaggedness was pretty noticeable but only during the pilot. People dwell too much on the negative and not enough on the positives.

I really haven't noticed anything wrong with it, and I've watched the first 4 episodes already. If any of you love Family Guy, and are holding off because of reviews... don't! The transfers are minor drawbacks to owning this excellent show on DVD (I guess... once again I haven't seen any jaggies!).

It's not the transfer - there is nothing wrong with the transfers themselves - the pixilating and "shimmering" is in the original masters.

Listen to the commentaries - they mention the pixilating in one of the episodes (I believe it's the second commentary on the second disc).

Seth McFarlane actually says that they'd get animation back from Korea and the timing would be off in a few scenes by a few seconds. So instead of sending it back to be reanimated, they would just hit the "pause button" to add a few seconds of still animation, which results in the pixilating and shimmering everyone's freaking out about.

It's not the transfer - it' in the original masters, the dvds just accentuate it - because it's there in the original broadcasts also. And it's even worst in the UK discs.

I think this is still on topic: Why can't I rent it first? I've called the Blockbuster and Hollywood Video nearest me, and they're not planning on carrying it. WTF? Why isn't it carried like the Sopranos or Sex & the City?

I LOVED the show, but I'd like to check out the quality first. Plus, I bought the South Park box set, but realized that I'm probably not going to watch the episodes again. I'm afraid the same thing will happen with Family Guy.

I've been on the fence the past couple days on whether to buy this or not. I'll probably buy it eventually.

The ordel with this DVD is one of my personal worst:
Didn't plan on getting it at all
Found it cheap and preordered it
Heard about the problems but still wanted it.
Figured I'd save the money and try to cancel it last night since Chapters was so slow to send it out.
Come home today to find that it's waiting for me at the post office.

Guess I'm gonna keep it and will have to see tomorrow what all the fuss is about.

i got mine today and while there are a couple jaggies here and there, it's classic comedy and it shouldn't prevent anyone from buying this set
