Enemy Below Cancelled

Maybe old news to some but according to DavisDVD:

"Fox has cancelled the upcoming DVD release of The Enemy Below. The studio no longer owns the rights to the film. The rest of the Fox War Classics Wave 3 collection (Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison, Sink The Bismarck, 13 Rue Madeleine, The Blue Max, and The Desert Fox) are still due on May 20th."

You mean they did all the pre-production work on this without knowing if they have the rights? Bizarre! Also puzzling is that IMDb lists 20th Century Fox as the production company & CBS/FOX as distributors. Does that mean Image would get it if it's now with CBS/FOX? Or are the rights owned by someone else? Anyone know?

Really professional.

This bites, because that's an excellent, tense submarine film and Curt Jurgens and Robert Mitchum are both outstanding in it.

That's a shame!

I just watched it the other night. I have a vhs pre-record and was watching where
all of his men called him a feather merchant and that he lost his nerve. That movie is so fine, Curt Jurgens Captain of the German u-boat, played his character to the fullest. I have nothing but 'respect' for the men who acted out other men, during World War 2.

I look forward to "Sink The Bismark" for the leading man is Kenneth More also seen in Walter Lords " A Night To Remember"
Mr. More played the second officer (Lightoller) of the doomed Titanic, I have the B & W 1.85:1 anmorphic disc.

"Sink The Bismark" Mr. More is Commander Shepard
Spoiler:
The man responsible more making the really tough choices to finally Sink the Bismark. Those decisions involved his son who was a airplane gunner from the aircraft carrier Arkroyal sent in for a torpedo attack.

The is a Japanese R2 version of the film available. I own this version which I purchased after DVD Empire informed me of the R1 cancellation. I purchased it from CD Japan.

I was really looking forward to this dvd. I'd like to know the real story behind it. The Enemy Below is a popular movie when it comes to war movies, and it baffles me how Fox didn't know that they didn't own the rights to it until now. I will definitely look into getting the Japanese disc.

The CBS/Fox reference is out of date. That distribution tie up finished a long time ago. The rights problem is probably something to do with the fact that the film was produced by Dick Powell, as were a couple of other Fox films. The rights may have reverted to Dick Powell's estate.

Looks like I got my wish. "The Enemy Below" is up on Amazon for Pre-Order again with a release date of May 25, 2004.

The Enemy Below

No rating or studio yet on the listing... I was REAL curious to see whether or not MGM bought the rights back or if it was someone else.

It's still going to be under Fox's "War Classics" line, if the preorder info I've seen is correct.
