Question on Dolby Digital

What exactly is the difference between Dolby Digital EX, and Dolby Digital? I was comparing the two Evil Dead discs, the Elite edition and the Anchor Bay 20th Anniversary Edition, and I noticed that the Elite disc had Dolby Digital, but the Anchor Bay was Dolby Digital EX. Please answer this for me, and try to help me decide which dvd to buy!

Dolby Digital has 6 channels L, R, Center, Suround R, Suround L, and Sub. Dolby Digital EX has a seventh channel. It has L, R, C, SR, SL, Sub, and a Center Suround. The Center Suround is behind the viewer between the SL and SR. Sometimes this is a discrete channel and sometimes it is matrixed.

neatMCsammer, If your receiver supports it and you have the extra speaker, then get the DD-EX soundtrack.

Pants, I understand DD-EX to always be matrixed in the L/R surround channels, in the theater or at home. http://www.dolby.com/ht/co_br_0110_L...rsGuideEX.html. Are you thinking of DTS, which does have separate matrix and discrete 6.1 modes?

Unless something has changed recently the centre back channel in DD-EX is always matrixed whereas it's sometimes discreet in DTS-ES.

Also, there is no sub channel per se. The .1 really just refers to LFE that is in the sound mix. If your speakers can't really handle really low bass at high volumes (which is the case with my speaker set up) you can use a subwoofer to reproduce these frequencies (either hooking up the front speakers through your sub woofer or using the bass management in your receiver) but some people simply have really powerful speakers and don't bother with a subwoofer at all.

Now that I'm on this tangent, info from DTS Online: http://www.dtsonline.com/dts-es2.pdf .

3rd bullet: A DTS-ES 6.1-discrete decoder will play the discrete back channel. It will also subtract the discrete back channel out of the matrixed LS and RS channels, restoring the LS and RS channels as independent.

Interesting. You learn something every day. I didn't know the redundant matrixed info was present in the 6.1 Discrete encoding. That's how DTS is backward compatible.
