Macross Fans: What's Next?

I have the 9 disc Macross Boxset and was wondering what other official titles in the series exist and what order should I watch them?

Also, what dvd releases are the best?

Have you checked out the Macross Plus miniseries from Manga?
Phenomenal mix of cel and CG animation, transforming, battling robot planes, and they even threw a love triangle into the mix.
Don't bother with the movie edition and go straight for the 2 disc series.

though i own both versions, I actually prefer the movie. With the added footage at the end, it's emotionally more fulfilling than the mini-series. This is because I prefer the movie format (building momentum to climax) over the tv format (more flexible story stucture with several climaxes, etc), so you may or may not agree.

i hope macross zero crosses over to the states soon (other than through bootleg). it's supposed to be very good.

what's a good primer for the earlier macross/robotech series? I've only seen macross plus and I'm a little hesitant to watch the earlier series since I'm not too keen on older anime with a dated look.

I have only seen the Macross and Robotech series themselves. Plus I have SuperDim. Fortress on VHS but have no idea what time line it fits into.

What is the main diff. between the movie and mini series versions?

ADV is going to be releasing uncut Southern Cross and Mesopeda(sp).

Those two series, while unrelated to Macross, make up the 2nd and 3rd story arcs of the Robotech series as seen in the US.

Its been posted on animeondvd.com

Running time.

Movie is 115 minutes. Series is 150 or so minutes.

They have the same sensibilities, if that's the right word, since the same director made it. In the booklet for the movie dvd, there's a quote from the director saying how he wants the movie to appeal to both fans and the general audience.

The movie does not flow as smoothly and lacks the little character moments and details of the series, but it's slick and fast-paced with a tighter (but less logical) storyline and a better ending (which is the defining factor for me).

You should be aware that Macross Plus is basically the Top Gun of anime. My friend didn't like it because he's a big fan of Top Gun and thought they were too similar for his tastes.

Hey, just my 2 cents. While I do see the similarites between macross plus and Top Gun, I am a big fan of macross plus, but am not really a fan of Top Gun. I find the overal presentation of Macross plus compared to Top Gun, to be much greater. Much deeper, better story, cooler action scenes, better music (Yoko Kanno ) Anyway, you can also add me to the camp that has only seen macross plus and am wondering where to expand in the macross world
