CSI: Season 1 DVD set; in fullscreen??

My wife is a big fan of CSI, and we both enjoy watching it in High Definition on our relatively new HDTV. The first season box set just recently caught my eye at Best Buy, and I was considering getting it as a gift for her. I picked up the box to check out the specs (as well as the price), and I was rather perplexed to see that it is in fullscreen!

What gives with this? Are there any future plans to release a widescreen set?

(If this has been covered previously, I apologize. I am once again frustrated with the DVD Talk search feature, as I cannot search for “CSI.”)

Great!

But, what about the possibility of a re-release of Season 1 in widescreen?

Will I miss anything if I skipped the first season and start at the second season?

Bought it anyway since FS is the OAR I saw them on my TV and I still have the TV. It looks and sounds great.

Not really. I didn't start regularly watching CSI until mid-way through Season 2. The episodes stand on their own (like Law & Order) so it is easy to catch on. If you have a regular TV though, I recommend the set - or at least catch the repeats on cable.

Ah... This may be the way I go, then. Can anyone else confirm that the R2 sets are widescreen?

According to this review , the R2 is NOT widescreen:

I remember reading somewhere (although I can’t find the source now) that this program was originally filmed in 14:9 widescreen. If this is the case then it’s a shame that this UK DVD release is presented in 4:3 fullscreen as it’s not how the program was meant to be watched. This point aside the video quality on this release is perfectly adequate, not staggeringly good but adequate enough.

Mr. Blythe replied to this question back on 1/23/03:

"CSI is being distributed in all regions as a full frame. Like those international companies, Paramount is only a distributor. We distribute what we receive from the supplier. I would have thought you knew that Paramount is fully committed to 16:9 on all its own product."
