I think the MGM disc has better sound, too. The Criterion disc is only Dolby 2.0 Stereo Surround.

The MGM disc has a nice semi-discrete 5.1 sound mix (it's a remix from the original 2.0 Stereo Surround, and is fairly balanced). It's a little murkier, and the separation isn't quite as nice as a film made in surround to begin with, like the new Star Wars or something, but it's decent - the dialogue is really clear, and isn't overpowered by the music like it is sometimes on the Criterion disc.

Overall, I'd still have to say that the MGM disc has a better image and sound mix. It's not really an either/or thing. They're both worth picking up - one for the commentary and spine number ( ) and the other for the superiour A/V presentation.

I'll be waiting a few weeks to get RD used, I'll probably have to pay a bit more since it sold for so much new.
The other night I checked out one of the used CD stores around here. They had all three versions of Red Dragon (FS, WS, DE) for 10.98. Got the 2 disc of course, now to wait for the new Manhunter.

For a few brief seconds at the begining, where Clariese and Hannible talk in his cell, i flipped on the 2.0 stereo french version and it sounded better then the 5.1 english version. It had a lot more bass to it, and sounded more creepy. So get the criterion version if you can find it.

Wow... excellent find. I saw the DE used yesterday for $18 but balked.

$18 for the DE is a very good price. Its MSRP is $35.

One day shy of a year since the last post - way to resurrect a dead thread.

Yes, the commentary on the Criterion version is VERY good - it's well worth getting both versions of the disc if you're a fan of the film.

I didn't realize it was that valuable! I got mine for $15 brand new along with Seven Samurai a couple years ago at a new/used record store!

I grabbed one from Wherehouse Music for about $22, and they even had a "buy 3 used, get 1 free" deal.

Yes, it is that good. One of the best commentary I've ever listen to. I'm glad I have mine.

Hey guys, don't forget to check out the Used DVD Treasure Hunt right here at DVD Talk (link in my sig) for OOP titles like those discussed here. One copy of SoTL (CC) sold for $28 shipped, another appears to still be available at the same price. Also the Manhunter Limited Edition seems to still be available at $23.99. Cheers!
