New LIne..a lot of high quality discs at affordable prices

Maryang Palad 04-11-03 12:17 PM

For me its a tie between Goodtimes and David Lynch (studio). These two will drastically reduce my DVD spending.

Imagine $6.99 each DVD with Goodtimes and $49.99 with David Lynch every year.

Deckard-10 04-11-03 12:31 PM

1. Anchor Bay
2. Criterion
3. Fox

ryuryu2949 04-11-03 12:37 PM

1- Criterion obviously. after that:

2- Dreamworks
3- Universal -yes, yes, I know... BTTF and ET... but, almost all of their new releases have DTS, commentary, and deleted scenes (examples: Spy Game, Undercover Brother, About a Boy). They consitently give the consumer worthwhile extras.
4- One manufacturer to look out for is Warner Bros. These new two-disc editions are really unbelievable.
5- New Line Platinum is great (not a big infinifilm fantho),
6- MGM is okay, but very hit and miss.
7- Fox is very mediocore (I hate the mandatory FBI warning at the beginning),
8- Buena Vista only good for VISTA
9-As for Paramount, high prices, shoddy extras, no DTS, but consistently good transfers.
10- Miramax is consistenly pretty bad
11- Columbia... well don't get me started, they are the worst (well, except for Ghostbusters and Donnie Brasco)

I dont have any lions gate or anchor bay, so I cant pass judgment.

danol 04-11-03 12:46 PM

Twentieth Century Fox, or Dreamsworks, I can't afford Criterions prices either. Only Criterion I own is "Hopscotch" stars Walter Mattheu, Glynda Jackson, Herbert Lom and Ned Beauty, plus others. I was pissed for all that money I paid, I had to listen to Monaural sound.

BuckeyeDawg 04-11-03 01:17 PM

The one with the most money, allowing them to put out the nicest, high - quality DVD's.

I think Criterion, Anchor Bay, New Line, Universal, and Dreamworks should all join together, monopolize the market and make kick-ass releases!

Ok, so I was dropped on my head as a child, and a teen, and as an adult...and...

pro-bassoonist 04-11-03 01:30 PM

I can tell you how you could force DVD buffs back into the realm of VHS:

Give 'em all (movies) to Fox Lorber!!!

MrPeanut 04-11-03 01:38 PM

If every disc was by Criterion, I never would have bought a player. They are the most overrated and overpriced thing in DVD. Sure, they usualy do a good job, but no better than a regular special edition the major studios put out routinely at half the price now. It frustrates me that they are the only viable option for me to get a lot of great films like Kurosawas and Fellinis. All you guys in love with Criterion are either brainwashed by the spines and logos, or still stuck in LD world when they were special.

Disney! Especially on the HK/foreign films that they have acquired the rights for...

;)

spyzdope 04-11-03 02:03 PM

I would mainly want a studio that offers all (or nearly all) of their titles through Columbia House so I could buy them all for around $7 each.

Also, I like the quality of New Line Platinum Discs and off the top of my head I can't think of any big New Line (Platinum or otherwise) titles that aren't offered from CH.

davidlynchfan 04-11-03 02:19 PM

Anchor Bay by default for me since I own the most DVDs from them (76).

Kino is quite underrated as well.

BuckeyeDawg 04-11-03 03:02 PM

Mr. Peanut - I have to agree with you. Occasionally, Criterion will throw out a movie or two I like. But a lot of obscure titles and/or foreign films at much higher prices than I'm willing to pay. I've managed to come by some quality criterion titles, but only because I got them at very reasonable prices.

As for LaserDisc titles, Criterion released a lot more LaserDisc titles than they do now, for some reason. For example, "Dead Presidents" . I would LOVE to see a criterion release of this. Hell, I'd settle for a SE, rather than just my one disc, barebones copy.

adamblast 04-11-03 03:22 PM

Columbia House? :D

RichDB10 04-11-03 03:23 PM

Anchor Bay or Blue Underground

inri222 04-11-03 03:29 PM

Criterion

slop101 04-11-03 04:06 PM

New Line for the newer big-name Hollywood stuff.

&

Criterion for the classic Hollywood and obscure/indie/foreign stuff.

Avid 04-11-03 04:32 PM

Criterion.

I'm unhappy with most studios between not including the original soundtrack or not releasing the theatrical cut when they make the SE (if they release it at all).

Thirsty 04-11-03 04:46 PM

FOX

Please don't make assumptions.

I own three Criterion, two of them are Chasing Amy and Royal Tennenbaums... the cheap ones. (The other is SOTL, if anyone's wondering... one of my very first DVDs back in 1999)

They are too expensive for me, and I don't like many of the titles (or, I MIGHT like them... but I can't rent them since places here wont carry them, and they're too expensive to blind buy)

My choice for them was simply because they treat movies the way I would treat movies if I was in charge. They try to give the director the power on those discs all the time. They never put stupid critic quotes on the cover, OAR is always something that's very important to them.

If every single movie I wanted always came to DVD like that, I'd be happy as a clam.

So please avoid making assumptions like that again.

New Line- best at evrything, a/v extras (even on lesser titles) and nice prices

DarthMaul420 04-11-03 06:25 PM

What no love for Image or Elite ??? :)

The Great:

Anchor Bay is my favorite company. I wish they had the rights to more films. Many cult films at low prices = happiness! Plus they have already learned why you should leave classic films alone, NightOTLDead.

However, I'm giving the studio vote to New Line who is turning into a major player in the entertainment industry. Can't beat a small company that went from "Freddy's House" to almost complete bankruptcy to the great work they are doing now. LOTR was truely a make or break film for them. As said before in this thread, they put extras on most films no matter what audience they are serving.

Criterion is always outdoing themselves. Their latest releases are really good! Can't wait to see what they have in store.

The Good:

W-B, MGM, and Fox: Many of their discs have been A+ material so far. MGM has shown significant changes in pricing their titles within the last two years. However, these companies have huge film vaults. Just hope to see more titles from them!

Dream Works has been doing very well too.

The Ugly:

Paramount:(Worst)

-- Horrble Pricing that reflects a late 80's VHS rental market way of thinking!

-- Any Extras? Interactive Menus is not an extra! No trailers on many discs!

-- SE's? Where are they? I am worried that when the Indy films do come out they will be messed up somehow due to the fact that Paramount hasn't worked with major dvd editions yet!

-- Quality! Why is almost everything you release in region 1 totally suck of quality. TNG box sets for example or the crappy Godfather containers.

Dimension --- Should just give the films to Anchor Bay.

Columbia --- I can't remember the last big name title they released?

gutwrencher 04-11-03 08:22 PM

Criterion
Anchor Bay
Blue Underground
they all have turned me on to more films and directors than any others.
