I recently picked this up and have to say (it looks to me like) they did a great job with the DVD. The colors are very rich and vibrant, and the sound is crisp and clear. For all the times I'd seen it I never knew there was an Overture, nor an Intro by DeMille himself. Yet another DVD that makes you experience a film in a different way. Now if I only had a movie theatre-sized screen....

What were your experiences?

there is only one minor problem:

The original Aspect Ratio of the 10 commandments was 1,78:1( it was filmed in sth. like 1,56:1).
What you got is the aspect ratio of the re-release in the late 80īs, which is 2,20:1.

Since the new RC2 DVD is in 1,78:1 I would really like to see which version is the more preferable one.

But without doubt, your DVD has not the dir. intended Aspect Ratio.

But that doesnot have to be toooo ba, since I love wider Aspect Ratios, and 2,20:1 is FAR cooler (to me )than 1,78:1.

W/out really understanding what the first reply meant, I thought the DVD did the movie more justice than the showings on tv and the once or twice it came to town at a thearte. Vivid color, great sound, it is a great DVD to have in your collection. The acting was ungodly awesome.

TTC was filmed in vistaVision ('Motion Picture High Fidelity') which creates a very large negative that careful reframing can do a lot for/with - the c. 2.20:1 AR of the DVD version is quite spectacularly good, and I'm sure that Mr DeMille would have been very pleased & happy with the result!...

Some other movies in vistaVision: White Christmas (which was the first), High Society, North By Northwest

The movie is incredible. I wonder how much it would cost to create the same movie today? The acting is top-notch. One of my personal all-time favorites. It is much overlooked due to the biblical theme. It is not a very "PC" movie by today's standards. The same can be said for "Ben-Hur" dvd. Both movies are in my top 5 EVER!

Truth to tell, I'd not have noticed the aspect ratio had it not been point it out. I do have to say that it is very good on the DVD - like I said, all I'd need is a moviehouse-sized screen

Ronald & Hendrik, where do you get the idea that the R1 release of TTC is 2.20:1? My R1 copy is either 1.78:1 or 1.66:1 (hard to tell due to overscan). Both Amazon and the IMDB list the R1 DVD as having an aspect ratio of 1.66:1 (which according to the IMDB is the OAR). They could be wrong but my eyes aren't ;-) - the picture nicely fills my 16:9 display without horizontal black bars. So Stingo, (almost) without a doubt, your DVD does have the dir. intended AR ;-).

there it says 2.20:1

I mena it doesnīt have to be bad, in contrary, I think I would prefer the wider version!

I would just like to know if anybody has ever compared these two!

DVDReview is wrong.

http://www.thecinemalaser.com/dvd_re...dments-dvd.htm puts it at 1.78:1
http://www.widescreenreview.com/ puts it at 1.78:1
http://www.digitalbayou.com/DVD/revi...mmandments.htm puts it at 1.70:1

The R1 fills the screen of my widescreen without black bars on top and bottom. Believe me, I would see these if the AR was 2.20:1
The R1 and R2 are more than likely identical.

Ronald, why would you prefer a wider image if it crops out image from the original print? That just means that you're getting bigger bars to get rid of what you should be seeing. This is worse than P&S because at least P&S will crop it to fit your screen, this just makes it smaller!

basically it's because I LOVE WIDESCREEN.

And if it does not cut off anything, its ok, at least in this case where it was realeased once in thís AR.

This is one of my favorite movies in my collection. I think they did a decent job with the DVD...especially with the picture quality. Sound could be better, and a few extras would've been nice.
