I haven't got mine from Buy.com yet. I know Begotten is full-frame, but wondered if it's at least open-matte and how the quality is? Also wondered about the video on Longest Yard after reading a horrible review for North Dallas Forty's transfer. I love Longest Yard and was hoping it would be better.

...would a black-and-white 'art film' even be widescreen?

. . .

I was more interested in the quality of the dvd rather than the film. I've already read a few reviews of the actual film. IMDB lists the aspect ratio as 1:85:1, http://us.imdb.com/Technical?0101420
which was why I wasn't real happy with full-frame (especially since I have a 65" 16x9 HDTV).

...ahhh but it was filmed on 16mm stock - I'd lay bets that means it was filmed full-frame - so, watching the movie zoomed-in to fill your widescreen display would give you the approximate AR of this movie's theatrical showing, wouldn't it - not the best solution, I know, but hey - it's still better than VHS!...

Well, I should get Longest Yard tomorrow, but it looks like Begotten has been pushed back to 2/20.

NOOOOOOOOOOO! Where did you hear this?!? The official page still lists yesterday as the release date, and I had it on pre-order...

BTW, it was 16mm and full-frame.

Buy.com & DvdExpress both have 2/20 as the date now. Watched Longest Yard today & was happy. I also got North Dallas Forty & it wasn't a very good picture (like the review said), but in flipping through I saw a few scenes that looked pretty good. Longest Yard was much better, with pretty good detail and not bad color. The mono sound was a little distorted during the opening car chase, but ok after that. Great to see it widescreen on a 65" HDTV, just like seeing it open day with a fresh print! Although the other movies I watched earlier paled in comparison to Dinosaur, which was just incredible!
