I had never seen Russell Crowe in movie before except Gladiator. I am amazed by his acting in Gladiator. The next movie that I am interested is L.A Confidential. I wonder this movie is worth buying. Please reply me

I had always heard good things about L.A. Confidential, but never actually seen it until about a week ago, after somebody got it for me for Christmas. I was never the big film noir fan, but I thought this was pretty good. If you like Russell Crowe, his performance as the badass Bud White in this movie will not disappoint. I think this is a worthwhile purchase, but if you want Russell Crowe's finest performance, check out The Insider.

I like L.A. Confidential more each time I watch it. I'm very glad that I bought the DVD. Great movie, nice extras, great price. Definitely a must have.

LA Confidential is arguably the best film of the 1990s in my opinion. This disc is terrific and was my very first DVD, thus, not knowing about all of the bargains out there I paid $20. It was well worth it, the disc is still one of my favorites and has been watched again and again. The trasfer is good and the sound is excellent, the 5.1 channels are truly used well, especially for this type of film. The extras are also quite interesting, though a Curtis Hanson commentary would have been nice. This disc is a must buy. Even if you have never seen the film, it can readily be had for less than $14 at some stores now that the MSRP has dropped to $20 and so I would suggest buying it as you may very well love it as much as I and many others do.
By the way, this film is the first time I saw Russel Crowe in a film and I was quite impressed. He then did The Insider, which was a very good film, and my respect for him only grew. Now after Proof of Life and Gladiator (two VERY mediocre movies) I wonder if he is starting to sell out. Just a thought.

I agree. L.A. Confidential was the best film of 1997. Possibly in the top 10 films of the 1990's and definately in the top 25. Good luck!

Definitely in the top ten of the 90s IMO.
Nice disc, especially for the price you can get it for now. An interesting aspect of this movie for me was seeing one of the transvestites, Guy Pearce, from The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert play a completely different role. Who knew then that the other transvestite, Hugo Weaving, would be the main bad guy in The Matrix.

Great movie, but does anyone else wonder how Kim Basinger got an Oscar? Was she THAT good.
If you want to see another side of Russell Crowe, check out "Mystery, Alaska", he plays a blue collar amature hockey player.

Loved the book and the movie, but the book is better if you read James Ellroy's "LA Quartet" in order:
1) Black Dahlia
2) Big Nowhere
3) LA Confidential
4) White Jazz
Not compltetely necessary, but they do include many of the same characters.
His non-fiction account of his mother's unsolved murder is also good, "My Dark Places." Remember the scene where Russell Crowe rescues the woman tied to the bed? Ellroy says he always has a woman being rescued in his books because he was unable to save his mother.

If anyone asked me what movie I would describe as a "perfect" movie LA Confidential would be one of my picks. Intelligent and witty writing, direction, acting, editing, production; I mean The Whole Package. If you want to see a well crafted film, do not miss this one. Its got a timeless quality to it.
I live near a lot of the places they filmed The Frolic Room, Formosa Cafe, and the Los Feliz homes so I'm always reminded of this modern classic.
But the horror when Titanic won the Oscar. Why do they feel like they have to give it to grand epics all the time?

I read the book before I saw the movie. I was very let down by the film. Only about 1/3 of the book is represented in the movie and it is completely different from the book. My brother, who has not read the book, sings the movies praises but I don't care for it. I probably should not have seen it so close to finishing the book. It will forever be tainted. However, it is still better than Titanic.

I'm reading the book now and to me, the book is soooo different from the movie it's wild.
But I can see where cutting out "1/3" of the book was necessary

My only criticism with Elroy is his OVER USE of derogatory ethnic names. I mean at first it fit the characters and atmosphere of the '50's, then I realized the characters and Elroy where using the words even when they seemingly didn't have to. Simple thoughts by characters about Black, Gay, and Hispanic characters turn into a Race bashing free for all

But alas, I realize...it's just a book and they are just words.
