Hunt for Red October was the better film, IMO.

The HFRO is a great game of cat and mouse between the 2 superpowers' submarines that was made when the cold war was still fresh in our minds. Basically everything that happens in the Crimson Tide occurs inside the US submarine but still a well made suspenseful film.

Crimson Tide is one of my favorite movies. It has a lot of action, while Hunt for Red October is kind of slow. Das Boot bored me to tears and I can't stand english voices dubbed over foreign films.

Who doesn't hate dubbing? Watch foreign language films with subtitles!

They're both good. I have them both, and I'd say that it's not a case of "one or the other". I think that everyone will agree that HFRO is an excellent movie, so I won't comment on its merits. Crimson Tide is definitely an enjoyable movie also. I just watched it again a couple days ago, and was reminded that it is really well done as well as entertaining -- Gene Hackman does a *great* job in his role.

While I like both movies, I think The Hunt For Red October is a better film.
I also liked U571, and would like to see Das Boot.
Perhaps the most unusual submarine movie is Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan. OK, it's not REALLY a submarine movie, but much of the film is patterned after the classic submarine films (which I haven't had a chance to see yet). It really does have the feel of a submarine movie - and if you think about it, theres not a big difference between a tin can underwater or in space. If you're hit by a torpedo (photon or not) you're just as dead.
I haven't bought The Hunt For Red October OR Crimson Tide on DVD only because neither is an anamorphic disc. When they are re-released I will definitely get them.

I would pick Sean Connery/Adam Baldwin over Gene Hackman/Denzel Washington only if I had to. Otherwise buy both DVDs!
...and throw in Das Boot and U-571, ya cheapskate!! Hey, you cant beat a great sub movie!
