I had heard good things about this movie, some of them about Murray's performance, but I have to say that I didn't think it was all that great. There were many parts I found amusing, but nothing like Murray's earlier work. My favorite character was the young Scot with the deformed ear!
I also noticed some similarities between this movie and Election in humor, but I found Election to be much more entertaining.

I was totally underwhelmed by this movie. Bill Murray is good, but that's about it. I think the movie "Election" is in the same vein, but it's funnier, better written, and features better performances.

This is an outstanding movie that I've watched countless times and is easily one of the two or three best movies of the last 10 years. I love it and I can't wait for their next!

I guess I'll express support for Rushmore. There are so many people here at DVDTalk who like (or even love) this movie that there are bound to be people who see the movie after hearing from fans who are underwhelmed once they see the movie, and that's OK.
Just one word on Election: although both movies are set in high school, they're entirely different films. Rushmore is a coming-of-age movie (for both the kid and Bill Murray's character); Election is a political satire. I like both movies (and think Rushmore is a great movie), but enjoy them for entirely different reasons.

In my experience, you either get Rushmore or you don't. There isn't a lot of middle ground. I and most of my friends loved the film, but others I know just didn't enjoy it at all.
I think part of the problem is people go into it expecting a straight comedy ("Hey, it's got Bill Murray in it! It's going to be like Caddyshack!") and get something far more nuanced. If you don't catch the undercurrents of the film, the subtleties of the characters, you're not going to like the film as a whole.
I'm proud to have the Criterion edition of the film in my library, both for the quality of the film itself and the quality of the supplements. It's probably one of my top 5 DVDs.

Agreed. This film has a FANTASTIC performance by Bill Murray, but the film as a whole can be described as a love/hate film. I personally loved it, and also own the Criterion disc, but I know many who just don't get it. It's no big deal, cuz I don't understand/get any of the Adam Sandler movies. I totally agree. Election is a darker film with very adult themes. Rushmore is very much a coming of age film. Look at the use of sex in each film. In Election, it's tossed off, jokes about it left and right. In Rushmore, it's misunderstood by the kids, and one of the pivotal scenes concerns how children view sex as opposed to adults. And that's just one of the differences. So, while Election and Rushmore both take place in a high school, does not mean they're even close in terms of content, and it doesn't make sense to compare them.

I am very proud to have both Election and Rushmore CC in my library. I have watched both films a few times and they both get better after each viewing. I highly recommend both of them.
