Just wanted to know what you guys feel about Kubrick's movie on DVD. Some people said they would skip this one when I asked about it. I just want to know what you guys think.
Audio? Video? Extras? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, brw. You can find a review of the shining (by our own mr.kleinman) in the reviews section here. Basically, video is pretty bad for a dvd, audio is mono (as with all kubricks). But there is one dynamite extra - a making-of documentary with some nice footage of kubrick and nicholson. Worth a look, and if you're a kubrick fan, a buy.

Also keep in mind that there are a lot of Kubrick reissues coming out in 2001. While I didn't see the Shining on that reissue list, I can imagine that it's in the queue.

Still, it's a great flick, and the included documentary is an amazing look at how Kubrick operates. (In addition, you'll never look at Shelley Duvall in quite the same way again.)

The Shining is worth it just for the Steadicam shots in the hotel.

I have The Shining DVD. The Picture quality is pretty bad with some major artifacting in a number of scenes. The main extra is the "Making Of" documentary, directed by Kubrick's daughter, Vivian, and its pretty interesting. Also the original trailer for the film is great and well worth seeing. But the quality of the transfer makes it difficult to recommend this (especially if the reports are true that Warner Bros. is remastering the Kubrick films for another release). So I say only get The Shining DVD if you can get a really good deal on it.

1. The video and audio quality are poor for DVD, but still better than VHS.

2. You can pick up The Shining for under $5 from Columbia House. Do a search for the $.89 thread.

3. The documentary is worth the $5 alone.
