I finally got around to watching this last night. I had never seen this movie and was very pleasantly surprised - it ended up being much better than I had expected. Good direction by Michael Cimino, great acting by Jeff Bridges. Clint Eastwood is the usual Clint character (not that there's anything wrong with this). The excellent photography really gives the whole thing an excellent time and place seventies feel.
Unfortunately this DVD is not anamorphic, but it is still a very nice 2.35:1 LBX transfer. I noticed a small amount of jagged edges around some objects...but other than that the picture is very sharp and the colors were vibrant. I didn't notice any pixellation or any other distortion. For comparison I watched it on a 60" progressive scan RPTV.
The sound is DD mono. I was impressed with the quality of it. Listen to the exhaust on the 59 Cadillac at the beginning for a very well recorded sound effect.
Other than that the disc is featureless except for a 'collectible booklet' and the theatrical trailer. Amazon and Express have it for $13.99 so it's still a bargain if you like the movie....a pretty good presentation of a great old caper movie. Any other thoughts? Just thought I'd write this as it seems to be a somewhat underrated movie.
