I've got to the point where I can't find any recent films I like, so I'm spreading my net and embracing the history of cinema (something I should have done long ago!). I've already convinced myself to get The Third Man, Yojimbo and Seven Samurai but I haven't made my mind up with this one.....help needed please!

personally, i love this film. its powerful, and funny and deep at the same time. i would highly recommend the DVD. the commentary is fairly interesting too...and the other supplements give a decent introduction to Bergman.

I agree with kefrank. This is a great and unique film, and having the commentary is quite insightful.
Also, The Third Man is one of my all-time favorites. And if you like Kurosawa, get High & Low!

Side-note: If you like Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, don't forget Sanjuro and the Samurai I, II, and III - all starring the indomitable Toshiro Mifune and directed by Kurosawa!
Haven't seen Seventh Seal yet, but it's on my shelf (among 60 other Criterion titles I'm trying to get to! :mad

I loved this one, and thought the extras on the disc were very good. For comparison, here are my likes on the other Criterions:
Amarcord -- Did not like
Nights of Cabiria -- Liked
Seven Samurai -- Really liked
Yojimbo -- OK
Picnic At Hanging Rock -- Pretty, but not great
Black Orpheus -- Liked
And God Created Woman -- Really liked
Charade -- Really Liked
Alphaville -- Huh? OK, I guess, but very strange
Blood For Dracula -- OK
Flesh For Frankenstein -- Umm, maybe OK, I guess.
39 Steps -- Liked

I believe that Samurai I, II, III were not directed by Kurosawa.
And don't forget High & Low!

The Seventh Seal is one of the greatest films ever made. The Criterion trasnfer and extras are amazing. All the Criterion Kurosawas are worth picking up as well. Good luck!

Great film. Haven't seen the DVD yet, as I rented it last year on (gasp!) VHS. Creates several motifs that have been used in other films, especially playing chess with Death, the dance of the plague victims(at least, I think it is plague victims, it's been a long time), and the scene where the knight tries to talk to another knight that turns out to be a skeleton in armor(copied very well in Excalibur). Bergman makes a good film questioning life, and the result is a nihilistic and honest(from the filmaker's POV) depiction of the results of Nietzchean philosophy. Hope the extras are nice, I'm planning on picking this one up soon...it's number three on my Criterion wish list right after Seven Samurai and Third Man.
