Bowfinger - a bit of a disappointment

I thought this movie had funny parts and was a very nicely done DVD. The only real funny parts were Eddie Murphy playing the nerdy brother. Many humurous moments, few funny ones. 6 out of 10. I guess I had heard this movie was so funny that I felt let down even though I enjoyed watching it.

If you saw it at a theater with more people with you, it's a bit funnier. The humor feeds off of audience guffaws and laughter. I saw it as Steve Martin's kiss off to the Hollywood machinery, and his digs at Anne Heche (his former lover) were delicious (Daisy was playing the Anne Heche part, if you hadn't noticed).

You nailed it Patman..you just said a valuable and truthful point!
I felt the same way a bit. I did not laugh a lot, but it kept me glued to see what was next. Plus I just enjoy watching Eddie Murphy act! He cracks me up.

All in all..a great disc from Universal..and not funny funny funny, but funny.

I too was taken in by the thought of Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy in a film together. Watching it though I realized it was a Hollywood satire. Not very clever, but was very funny. I kinda lamented that in the commentary it was noted that several funny scenes were cut for "pacing." Somehow, I think the audience wouldn't have cared about pacing had those parts been really funny. As it stands I think the movie is really good but not a must own unless you really liked it.

I thought the film took too long to get going, but it really picked up the pace once the nerdy character was introduced. I've watched the audition scene and the freeway scene at least five times since I got the disc on Friday. I've only watched the outtakes, so I can't comment on the special features. The transfer looked fine and the menus were well done.

Although not my favorite Steve Martin or Eddie Murphy picture, I thought the two worked well together. Overall, the film was entertaining with some very funny scenes.
Yeah . . . the nerdy character intro was probably the funniest followed closely by the freeway scene.
. . . and another excellent Collector's Edition from Universal!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this one was listed as a Collector's Edition, was it? The only reason why I bring it up was that I was suprised that it wasn't when I saw the features on it.

Patman; Did Anne Heche sleep her way to the middle like Daisy did? I knew he dated her but I honestly missed the connection.

I liked the movie a lot in the theater, and loved it on DVD. Picked up some stuff that I hadn't caught the first time around - "Don't you love Smashing Pumpkins?" "I love doing that!" went right over my head the first time. Yes, Jif was great, but so was Mindhead, the Laker Girls, Kit's rant about catchy lines, the Mexicans becoming auteurs, and on and on. Guys, give it another shot!

Isn't this done in DTS? If so.. how does it sound?<HR>
It has both a DD 5.1 and a DTS soundtrack. As I don't have DTS capability I don't how it sounds in DTS.

I have to admit that a second viewing of this movie has improved my opinion of it. Again it is not the belly laughs that Planes, Trains is, but alot of the humor is the subtle, satirical look at Hollywood that is not always present during the first viewing. Cool commentary too. Who would have guessed that all those cars were digital?

I thought the movie was very funny. The scene(s) with Eddie Murphy crossing the freeway are classics.
I know that the audience in the theater enjoyed this movie more than any other I saw last year.

Had to update this because I now have DTS and had to see it again. I still don't find it laugh out hilarious. Jiff audition, freeway scene, closing Taiwan movie all very funny. The rest was humorous.
DTS offered more clarity throughout. It also brought out the soundtrack which in 2 parts the vocals of the soundtrack I felt collided with the dialogue of the movie. Can't wait for my SPR DTS to show up.

I liked Bowfinger a lot and felt Eddie did a great job.
I've been saying Eddie should do a movie without a being the STAR for a long time and was happy to see this movie come about.
For the record, I didn't even bother with the DD 5.1 track. I went straight to DTS.

I play the DD sometimes in certain scenes and just laugh. Sound is a very important thing for the total movie experience.
The sound has to engulf you, seduce you..just that Dolby Laboratories don't believe this 100%.
Just 90%..DTS 100%.

i watched this movie the other day & was also disappointed. i went in with no expectations & still felt that this movie was not very good.
there were some mildly funny parts but only 1 or 2 that i laughed out loud (& those were chessy sight gags). i am sure the Hollywood crowd loved this movie & i can see why it was a critic favorite but for mr. everyman...don't waste your time.
the dvd is well done with a great transfer & DD or DTS track (neither of which are really necessary for this kind of movie). the extras are okay. couple of deleted scenes, some short funny outtakes, & an awful puff-piece behind the scenes featurette which is just all the cast members sucking Steve Martin's d!ck. i had to fast forward thru some of it it got so bad.
tried to watch the commentary but eventually gave up about half an hour thru it. it is hard to listen to a commentary when the movie is not so good.
again, a decent effort, but not on pair with frank oz's previous efforts with steve martin.
