Has anyone seen this movie yet??? I'd really like a review from someone who's seen it. Is it as good as all the critics say it is? I'd really like to get it on DVD, but I need some feedback before I do.

Just watched it.
Like most movies, I try to read reviews only to a certain context. Seeing(the movie) for myself simply reaffirms many of the reviews I read. Epic storytelling and excellent acting makes for an outstanding film(in this case). I can go on on ...praising the movie but I'll leave it to DVDReview excellent review of the film.
Personally, I love the story, the epic battles, and the excellent acting by Gong Li and the other actors. Much like "The Last Emperor" in scope, I simply marvel at how they made the film and tell a story that match the visuals. I would recommend this film, a little gem that should not be missed.

I agree 100% with the above comments. I saw
this in the theaters 2 weeks ago and the DVD
is on it's way. Chen Kaige (Temptress Moon,
Farewell My concubine) has done a magnificent
job with this epic story 'a la' Ran.
And what a difference 5,000 real extras make
compared to a digitized crowd of 5,000...

My 2 cents - I just watched it and loved it. If you own The Last Emperor you owe it to yourself to own this (the making of the first emperor). Beautiful epic. Still $16.99 at buy.com,I believe. Just finished watching the dvd with director's commentary - this is also an excellent commentary. You can feel Chen Kaige's pride in his accomplishment but he is also humble and humorous. His extremely personal revelation about his performance as the prime minister is amazing.
