Greetings,
I've seen ads for Phantom Menace VCDs on Ebay for the past few weeks. Has anyone tried out this disc, and how does it compare to a normal DVD? I know this is slightly off-topic, but since we won't see anything from Lucas with a DVD logo until 2005, I thought I would ask.
Thanks.

A "Friend" of mine has a copy :-) and when he received it he watched it and was
that he wasted money. The VCD is HIGHLY pixelated and was a major disapointment. All actions sceens looked pretty bad, almost like a bad cable connection or grainy video tape. Save your money IMHO.

Depends on which one you get. The Malaysian one is pretty suck, but the Hong Kong version isn't too bad. If you get VCDs, it's VERY important not to have too high of expectations about them. They're stored on conventional CDs, and have ONE TENTH the bitrate.

You can only expect, so much from a VCD. They are problem the worst format possible for a movie with a lot of action. I thought the Malaysian version version was worth the $10 I spent, but I have watched VCDs for years so I expected the pixelation.

And now I've discovered DVDs of the series on the auction sites. They claim to be in 5.1 Dolby English with Japanese and Chinese subtitles burned onto the screen. Various sources are reported: China, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands. Also, one of the auctions claimed the original trilogy has the extras from the laserdisc. Anyone have any other information? If you don't want to discuss this on a public forum you can mail me at [email protected] (my shady transactions anonymous email address)
Thanks guys!

The DVD's are essentilaly pirated versions of the LD copy of the Special Editions. So the extras are the interviews with Luca$$. Watch out if you plan to buy, the Empire Strikes Back is known to have many defective copes with a 2 second sound delay. I emailed someone that bought them on ebay and they mentioned that the "i'd rather kiss a wookie sceen" occurs after both of them have left.
I honestly don't own this set, the person I emailed said the quality was OK aside for the ES sound delay....but I'm willing to wait at this point.
