Buy this dvd!!! Not only is it a great film, it has the best 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer I've ever seen for a film of this age! In addition to Newman, a great performance by George Kennedy, he won the oscar! And it's fun to look for Dennis Hopper, Wayne Rogers, and Joe Don Baker in with this great cast.

"What we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week - which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it! And I don't like it any more than you men."
Admittedly, I remember that line as much from the old Guns 'n' Roses track Civil War as from Cool Hand Luke, but it's a great quote nevertheless.
This film is kind of like a prison buddy flick. While this puts it in the same category as Shawshank, it uses a very different style - much more friendly and brighter, which makes its ending more ironic.
The film's not for everyone, though; it sometimes moves with the pacing and literary drama of '60s films, rather than the quick-cut and action-oriented films of today. But it's a great movie.
Can't say anything about the DVD, though.
Will have to take Tuco's advice on the xfer. Personally, if I can dig up another thumbs-up for disc quality, I'll pick it up.

I agree with Tuco...an excellent 2.35 transfer on a great movie. I almost didn't buy it because it was 2.35, but was very pleased with the DVD. On top of this, it's a low coster!

i watched my copy last night. man, this is a great movie. one of my favorite "you can't kill a man's spirit" movies.
transfer was very nice but there was some dirt & grain but it was minor. sound is in mono but is clear.
no extras except the trailer & some cast & production info. a definite must-buy for those who enjoy strong character movies.
just for an opposing viewpoint, my wife could not make it thru the whole thing. another "man's movie" as she calls them.

Probably won't be many with both movies, but check out the beginning of Coogan's Bluff (Eastwood) and Cool Hand Luke. There is a fight scene in a bar that is almost identical in both movies. Check it out.
