The picture is grainy. The sound is tinny. But who cares? This isn't American Beauty, it's Flash Gordon - one of the greatest cheesy-'80s comic-book popcorn-action flicks ever!
Given the low popularity of Flash Gordon, it's unlikely to be redone any time soon, unless Criterion wants to take a stab at it. (This might actually make a good choice for them, and Flesh for Frankenstein and Blood for Dracula show they're not opposed to giving cheesy flicks A-star treatment.) But I own the version already on shelves, and I'm very plesaed with it.

JohnDoe: 'Flesh Gordon' is already out on DVD. I haven't seen it, so I can't tell you how it is. Express.com lists quite a few in stock, and lists additional footage as an extra. Here's the link: http://www.express.com/consumer/prod...CTNUMBER=13035

As DavidK mentioned, FLESH GORDON is already available. It is widescreen with about 10-15 minutes of previously-deleted footage worked back into the film. It also has an audio commentary track from the director (which isn't bad but is rather dry and sounds like it is being read from a prepared speach).
Picture and sound quality are adequate -- not great, but probably the best that can be expected.
All fans of FLASH (both the 1980s version and the Buster Crabbe serials) should at least rent FLESH. It has surprisingly good special effects and is a wonderful spoof of the old serial. Dead-on in spots. (And don't be scared off -- it isn't really a porno in the "hard core" sense. The sex and off-color jokes are more of the juvenile T&A variety.)

The original (defective) release was not in surround sound. However, that was recalled 2 years ago, so the odds of any retailer still having a copy are pretty slim. Just to be safe, go to www.image-entertainment.com and search for the title. Both listings will come up (the current one, and the defective title). You can compare ID #s and UPCs to make sure that your shipped title is correct.

thanks bboisvert.
got my copy in today, checked the site & i did get the non-defective copy. now to enjoy watching it.
since anchor bay likes doing special editions on so many cult classics, i wish they would take a look at this one. hey zombie, where are you at? tell your dad to have anchor bay do a special edition of this flick.

i wached my copy tonite.
not the best transfer in the world but definitely watchable if you are a fan of the movie. dont see this one getting special treatment anytime soon so get it if you like the flick.
sound is decent 2.0 dolby surround. no extras whatsoever except chapter selection. as bare-bones as it gets.
i did forget how funny this movie is (intentionally & sometimes unintentionally). why the hell weren't there costumes Oscar-nominated? i love Queen's soundtrack to this movie as well. made me feel like a kid again watching this. at least it is widescreen.
now if they would just put out Krull.
