I was half asleep when I watched it, but here goes:
It's ok, but drags a bit..
Ralph Fiennes begins writing a letter, a letter of hatred.. While writing the letter, the viewer is subdued to a series of flashbacks..
Basically, Ralph Fiennes has an "affair" with his good friend's wife (Julianne Moore). He begins to obsess over her and even has her followed by a private detective...
Later, he finds her diary and discovers that she has quite a different POV on their affair which ended 2 years ago, due to a promise she made to her husband and herself..
bla bla bla.. more flash backs, etc.. etc.., more of Ralph Fiennes bare ass and Julianne's breasts..
Julianne gets sick, friend forgives Ralph, bla bla bla.. .. liked the ending.
Bottom Line: Better than Random Hearts
Although there are 2 commentaries, one by the director and one by Julianne Moore, the DVD doesn't have much to make it worth a purchase.. (Unless you absolutely LOVE Ralph Fiennes or Julianne Moore)

Thankyou, Smog and Hanzou for the info. I think I will not purchase this movie. Although, I like tragic/romatic movies but I don't care for Random Hearts and the English patient. It sounds like "The end of the affair" is very much similar to the English patient....

I have not seen "The English Patient", so I cannot make a comparison. However, I can say that, in my opinion, "The End Of The Affair" was one of the best films of 1999. It's one of the rare cases where a movie is actually better than the book it was based on. Great performances, especially by Fiennes and Moore, who have wonderful chemistry, and beautifully shot. It's not for everyone, so I suggest renting it first.
