I have not seen the DVD in its' entirety so perhaps another member has more to offer. This is one of my favorite films but I think the DVD director's cut is a bit disappointing.
I bought the DVD as an upgrade from my non- Dolby Digital laserdisc. The first thing one notices is that the volume control has to be cranked, just like the LD. The picture is somewhat sharper than the LD, but doesn't blow it away.
The director did two things which I didn't like. He removed the song by Clannad (said it was too sentimental) and a longer speech by Chingagchook is appended at the end. I thought The original prayer/soliloquy was perfect. I understand some other additions were made to "flesh out" some of the characters.
A director's commentary would have been most appreciated. Still, this is a great film.

I'm glad Mann removed that cheesy new-age song. I remember watching the film in theaters, and suddenly I was dragged out of the film and back into the 20th century.
Mann also took out some of Hawkeye's "action hero" quips that are more appropriate for Die Hard and its ilk, but out of place in a period piece.
