Hi,
Don't know if this question belongs here, but I saw a few other people using the term pan & scan when talking about SW episiode one. I was wondering what that term meant. Thanks.

"Full frame" is not really an accurate term. Up to 50% of the picture is cropped out to fit your TV screen!
Pan&scan is the alternative to widescreen (also caled letterbox), which preserves the original aspect ratio of the film, by placing black bands at the top and bottom of the screen, allowing you to see the entire image as it was shown in theatres.
Pan & scan is usually used on movires shown on csble TV and VHS, etc. When the movie is transferred to video in pan & scan format, someone has to manually decide what is important for you to see (not yje director.) SO the transfer pans across an image in order to show you the person who is talking, etc. (On the wodescreen you'll be able to see all the action.) As a result, pan & scan not only robs you of a lot of the image but it also destroys the pacing & mood of entire shots because of this artificial panning, closeups that weren't supposed to be there, etc.
Especially in an action movie, P&S gives me a headache!
