This film is required reading for my grade ten English class, and I'm curious as to whether the film is any good, the DVD any good, and the film in comparison to the novel. Thanks much in advance.

Peat- you should read the book. The Criterion of the 1963 version is very close to the book, but it misses some of the social structure and character development necessary to pass a test.
The DVD is 1.33: original aspect ratio. There's a large scratch in a few frames mid-movie, but otherwise it's a great transfer; no grain, crystal clear.
The sound is mono, and you won't be impressed, but if you were as old as I am, you'd appreciate seeing the movie without experiencing the "Godzilla Effect".
The extras include excerpts from the novel read by William Golding- one of the most enjoyable features on the DVD. You can see how close the movie is to the book.
Warning: Three of my children (who are your approximate age) watched LOTF with me. Two wandered away 20 minutes into the movie, one stayed to the end, and none watched the extras. You should probably rent it unless one of your parents is a fan of the movie.
