I had not heard of this film when it came out in the theater, but lately I seem to be hearing it's a really great film, in the same line as the Evil Dead movies (ie horror/comedy).

Any opinions?

Yes, it tries to be a horror/comedy but I personally think it fails miserably. I didn't find much humor in the film at all, thought the acting and story was sad and felt all it did well was throw a high gore level in your face. I even consider myself a horror fan but I give this film a D

I love the movie. One of my favorite zombie flicks. It starts out slow, but picks up good about halfway into it and has an excellent blood bath of an ending.

I'm not sure what the budget was, but it couldn't have been a lot. Some of the effects are borderline bad/cheesy, but considering the movie doesn't take itself seriously at all it's ok.

The DVD itself has a decent transfer, letterbox 1.85:1. Only extra is a trailer.

Jamezuva,

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this way. i thought I was alone in thinking this was a horrible movie. I found very little of the movie to be funny -- although some of the ideas probably sounded funny on paper, I found the first half-hour to be slow, boring, and often silly (not in a good way). I don't think i laughed once -- and I found myself fastforwarding at one point 'cause it just wasn't entertaining me at all.

BTW - I love Evil Dead 2 and AOD -- which is why I wanted to see this, not to mention that it directed by Peter Jackson (Heavenly Creatures).

Anyways -- if you haven't seen the film. Rent it first -- because I'm obviously not the only one who didn't find its humor or attraction.

Apparition, if you like Evil Dead films, then there is little doubt that you will like this movie. It's just a little more insane than Sam Raimi's films, if you can imagine. I consider it and Cemetary Man to be quality remakes/tributes to Evil Dead. I just ordered the longer European PAL version called Braindead from sazuma.com now that I've got an APEX, so I'll probably be trading my Dead Alive on the forum soon.

I used to think Dead/Alive was cool, to see all that blood and guts. I threw it on a few months ago after not seeing it for a year and it was a chore to get through. Very boring, unfunny and the over-the-top gore is not reason enough for me to watch this one.

As for Cemetery Man, that movie is beyond Evil Dead and I don't see how you can compare the two (or call it a tribute) aside from the fact that they both have zombies (though Evil Dead has demons). CM is a stylish, surreal movie that will make you think and scratch your head. ED is far from that. (Note: I do actually like the ED trilogy)

Just my 2 cents.

I enjoyed Dead Alive. Hmmm. Maybe I shouldn't say that, seeing how the living dead do it on the kitchen table ... and the leading man feeds a corpse by pushing its head back like a Pez dispenser and stuff the freshments down ... or the fact the guy also MOWS downb about 80 party guests and there's so much blood he looks like one of the Stooges running on the slick floor but not getting anywhere. But, I did.

Cemetary Man is great also. More sex in that one. And I'll agree, it's also more stylish. I liked the ending. I caught both movies on IFC during their Halloween marathon.

I've tried to understand everyone's excitement over the Evil Dead movies. I like Bruce and Rami and all ... but, I dunno. And how is it a trilogy when Evil Dead II is a remake of Evil Dead Numer-o Uno? But any movie where a dude has a chainsaw hooked to the stump of his right arm ... it can't be bad. Heh.

How can anyone [/b]not[/b] like a movie that has a priest doing kung-fu on a zombie and saying "I kick ass for the lord!"?
To each his own, I guess.
I must point out though that Evil Dead 2 was not a remake of the first film. They recap the events of the first film (sort of) in the beginning and ED 2 picks up as Ash is being propelled through the woods by 'The Force'.
Hell, Raimi and crew sure didn't take it (continuity) seriously, so why should we?

So, concerning ED2, you subscribe to the same but different theory. I'll go along with that.
