Do you like the movie enough that you'll see it repeatedly? I bought it myself a short while ago with Hunt for Red October on a CDNow price cut, for about $6, and I hadn't seen it in a while, so I was factoring in the price of a rental. Obviously you've seen it and like it, and seem to only ask if the DVD is worth it. Well, the picture is going to be better than VHS, it's above average for DVD (no glaring artifacts/chroma/etc), but there are no extras.
If you just want to add it to your collection, I wouldn't pay too much for it, as there are many better movies out there (Seven Samurai and Ikiru to name two, which I saw in the past week, and freaking loved), but if you really want it, it's an average DVD with no glaring faults.

If it had any special features they sure don't stick out in my mind.
The video was pretty grainy.
The audio was 5.1 and sounded good.
I think this is a buy only for people who truly love the movie. Like my brother in law to whom I sold this somewhat disappointing disc.

Well, maybe "pretty grainy" was a little strong.
It's been a month or two, but I think it was when they were boarding the helicopter or in it, and some of the other darder scenes.
I just felt that the video was not that good. It wasn't terrible, but you didn't really feel like you were watching DVD quality video.

The first 10 minutes are grainy, but all previous versions (VHS, LD, etc) exhibit this problem. I think it's a problem with the source. After that, it clears up beautifully and makes a gorgeous disc. Very smooth and sharp.
It doesn't have any extras besides a trailer, but this isn't the type of movie which needs them. Like the others have said, if you like the film, buy the disc.
