I remember someone requesting a review of this a while back, and while I don't have the time nor the energy to write a thorough review, I figured I'd share some thoughts for those of you who were asking about it. (Keep in mind that these opinions are those of an obsessive Original Series fan.)

This is definitely one whack'd movie. It's billed as a mixture of "Swinger" and "Clerks," but that's about as absurd as comparing "The Bone Collector" to "Silence of the Lambs" and "Seven." Don't get me wrong - I thoroughly enjoyed "Free Enterprise," but it's just not that insightful. What it is, however, is fun. This is definitely a movie for Star Trek fans (particularly those who know their Original Series episodes and also are well versed in other classic Science Fiction films and shows), and I hesitate to think that any casual viewer could get much enjoyment out of this film.

"Free Enterprise" pretends to have a plot, and it's mildly enjoyable, but all the great moments revolve around movie references, Star Trek humor, and William Shatner making fun of his infamous career. These parts of the film make it priceless and a must for any Star Trek fan - I recommend watching this with a bunch of friends who will also get the inside humor. Side Note: you will notice, however, that more than a couple fairly well-known Star Trek lines are misquoted. I haven't watched the commentary to see if this was intentional, but it did seem a little out of place.

So, quite simply, if you love Star Trek, check this one out. On the other hand, if you're just a casual observer or think "Rescue 911" is a cool show, you should probably steer clear of "Free Enterprise."

Tip #1: If you haven't seen "Logan's Run," give it a once-over before watching "Free Enterprise."

Tip #2: Watch through the entire credits (yes, to the very end) - it's definitely worth it.

P.S. No chic will ever get her hands on my original Enterprise Hallmark ornament

Das Monkey,

Thanks for the review ! I was hesitating on whether to get this title or not. because of your review, I just ordered it @ DVDExpress! I just got Trekkies as well and am wondering how the two will compliment each other, if at all.

Later,

Just watched this one last night and agree with das Monkey's comments. Unfortunately I could not think of any of my friends who were enough of an Original Series fan that they would enjoy it.

buckee1 I also have Trekkies, it is different, a documentary of some some really die hard fans, some of them were a little spooky to me.

There are some Hard Core Trek fans that may take it all a bit too seriously!

"some of them were a little spooky to me."

Funny...!

Not a problem. As for my copy of "Trekkies," it appears to be MIA. Most frustrating - my Reel stuff rarely arrives in a timely manner anymore. Oh well - I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it.

Resurrecting this thread, because I just saw this movie over the weekend, and while I enjoyed it while watching it, it's been growing on me ever since, and I now want to ad to what das Monkey said above, and recommend it to others.

As the cover says, it's a cross between a Kevin Smith movie (pick one!) because of all the pop culture references, and Swingers. Now throw in some Trekkie ThirtySomethings, and you have the idea of what to expect.

William Shatner played a caricature of himself, and this was his first acting outside of the Star Trek series/movies I enjoyed. I kept waiting for him to say "Get a Life", but he came off as more pleasant and approachable in this movie.

Worth the rental, I'm debating on a purchase.
