I have a few reel GC's I need to use.
Thinking about putting 'Chasing Amy' on pre-order. Should I?

Thanks

Jonathan

There's a pretty easy test for this -- did you like Clerks and Mallrats? If so, you're probably going to like Chasing Amy. If you didn't like those 2, you're probably better off renting Amy first.

I would have to agree with bboisvert. I loved Clerks and Mallrats, and while I enjoyed Chasing Amy, the ending was a bit of a letdown for me. Still, though, I'm going to get it - the extras alone are worth the price of the disc if you're a fan of Kevin Smith (his discs are always top notch, imo). If you've never seen either Clerks, Mallrats, or Dogma, then you'll want to go rent Chasing Amy beforehand.

Since Chasing Amy is one of my all time favorite films I say preorder it, it's just a great film. I don't agree with the sentiment that if you like Mallrats and Clerks you'll like Chasing Amy. While I like all of Kevin Smith's films, Chasing Amy is a much more serious film than either Clerks or Mallrats. If you're really in doubt just go rent the VHS and see what you think.

What if you are like me and loved Clerks but weren't real fond of Mallrats?

BTW, I did see Chasing Amy and I thought it was a pretty good movie.

Goblincat, I'd say go back and watch MALLRATS again!

I don't think liking or disliking Clerks will have anything to do with whether you like Chasing Amy (unless you're already a fan of Smith's films). Clerks was not as "accessible" as Mallrats or Chasing Amy.

Chasing Amy was the first Kevin Smith film I ever saw, and I thought it was very funny. Some of the people I saw it with couldn't get past the female lead's voice, so if things like that can get under your skin, you might want to rent it first.

In some ways, Chasing Amy is kind of a film about the two male leads in Mallrats, only older.

I loved Clerks and I liked Mallrats, but I thought Chasing Amy was awful. Of course I had high expectations after Clerks and Mallrats. I recommend renting it first and then decide whether to buy.

red dog, i totally agree with you. i loved clerks & mallrats had its moments, but with all the critical praise, i thought chasing amy sucked compared to his first two flicks. it isnt as funny, nor entertaining as the first 2. rent it first! i remember being very bored with it. dont get me wrong, it had some funny parts but it did not deserve the critical acclaim that it got. it scared me away from seeing dogma in the theater & waiting to catch it as a rental. chicks & critics love chasing amy. i consider the first 2 flicks more "man" movies (crude, loud, & funny).

So you seem to be saying a film isn't good and doesn't deserved critical acclaim unless it's comedy on the most basic level. I loved Clerks and think it's funny as hell, but it's just one-dimensional slap-stick comedy. It really has no depth or originality. It's enjoyable but hardly impressive as a film. Mallrats is even more basic in it's going for nothing but cheap laughs. I for one didn't care for it.

I understand people liking Clerks and Mallrats because they're simple, pure comedies. In Chasing Amy KS tried to go for something a little more ambitious and add a little depth. To add gasp... drama to the comedy. Let's not criticize it because all you want from him is rude, crude comedy. No Chasing Amy isn't the same type of film as his first two, but that doesn't make it bad. Maybe if you go to watch Chasing Amy expecting more of the same you'll be disappointed, but eventually schtick wears thin no matter how funny it was the first time(which is why I don't understand making Clerks and Mallrat sequels).

Anyways, I'm not trying to put you down for your tastes. I think there's a place for everything and I just wanted to express that a film isn't necessarily bad because it isn't what you wanted it to be. As a comedy Chasing Amy might not be as funny as Clerks or Mallrats, but overall as a film it's very enjoyable (assuming you want romance/drama).

barrese, i appreciate your comments. i know alot of people love this film. my comments are strictly my opinion & Roger Ebert, i'm not. my view is that for those who go buy chasing amy b/c it is a Kevin Smith film, a lot are expecting clerks & mallrats & as you said, are sure to come away disappointed. i can see that if chasing amy was the first Kevin Smith film someone had seen & liked, they would probably hate clerks & especially mallrats. my view is rent it first as you earlier suggested. i just feel that it got a lot of acclaim b/c it pandered to the critics more & was much more female driven than his first two. (critics love that) i know filmmakers dont want every film they do compared to each other but kevin's stuff is pretty unique & its hard not to compare. i am not saying that it is a bad movie b/c it is not like clerks & mallrats, i am just saying that it is a bad movie in general compared to any flick. i was just bored in my humble opinion. god knows i like many other movies that are probably shittier than chasing amy. enough of my rambling. what did you think about dogma?

Chasing Amy is a nice solid movie with lots of witty dialog and insight. The ending is a little bizarre though...

baresse - I realize some people loved Chasing Amy. Hey - different people have different tastes. I like a good drama or action film as much as a good comedy. The mix in Chasing Amy just didn't do anything for me. If that is because I was expecting another Clerks, so be it. I only say rent it first because I know some people really liked it. Personally, I would never buy a dvd unless I have seen the movie before, even if everyone in the world said it was a great movie.

I absolutley loved Dogma. I thought it was not only hilariously funny but also had a plot to it. I was amazed by the pro-faith message that it gave.

Patman
I agree with you about the ending, it was rather absurdist. I do think it was that way though because it was true to the character. He as confused and didn't know who to deal with the situation so he landed up making an idiot of himself. It was only latter after stepping away from things that he realized how much of a nonissue it was and the mistake he made.

Red Dog
I think it's perfectly fine for people to not like Chasing Amy on it's own merits. I also think it important to let people know it's not exactly the same type of film as Clerks and Mallrats. I justed wanted to put out there that that doesn't necessarily mean its a bad film. I really think it's one of those things you need to see for yourself to determine if you'll like it. It's not a film that's easily pigeon-holed.
