We watched this last night and enjoyed the first half an hour. The story is taut and crisp during its setup but then it begins to unravel. Characters are introduced which lead nowhere. Long boring scenes ensue which tie a lead weight to the fast paced opening. And sadly the ending is a silly concoction. The transfer is very good and the soundtrack is active and very atmospheric. What a waste of a good opening. The writers could not sustain the great beginning. The plot leaks badly. Anyway, it's almost a decent film.

Very well described Smog....I agree with you totally, just having watched my DVD last night. I can't understand how many compare it favorably to Sixth Sense. Worlds apart in my opinion.
My advise is to rent before buying.

Smog pretty much sums it up. However, although it did go downhill I was still entertained for the most part. First half is the best though. Probably a good rental considering the entrance fee on this one.
The transfer is excellent and the 5.1 soundtrack is above average, it was pretty well done IMO.

I agree that the first half is better and the first time I saw it I was a little disappointed with the ending. Having finally seen it for a second time last night, I enjoyed the movie a lot more than my first viewing. I think Stir of Echoes holds up to multiple viewings a lot better than Sixth Sense, however - on a 1 time view only, Sixth Sense is easily the better of the two.

hanami, if you got a good price on it I'd recommend keeping the order. I just finished watching it and I didn't think it was that bad. The two major complaints I have about it are they didn't do a good job on following-up on one of the threads they created. The ending was a bit predictable so it was just a matter of waiting for the characters to catch up
I haven't seen 6th Sense yet so I can't give you any comparison to that. I am looking forward to seeing it again though to see how everything fits together knowing the end

Hmmmm. Although I liked "The Sixth Sense" quite a bit I prefer "Stir of Echoes" more. It's faster moving and scarier in both visuals and sound design. And great performances... especially from Bacon and Illeana Douglas.
Both films similar in many ways but I wouldn't let that deter you from enjoying them on their own terms.

I personally enjoyed Stir of Echoes quite a bit. I will agree with most people and say the first half is better than the 2nd half, but all in all it is a very entertaining movie. (And that's why we watch movies, isn't it?)
There are some very creepy parts in this movie also, and the beginning does have a strange "6th Sense" feel to it, although they are two very different movies.
Hope that helps!

I really liked Stir of Echoes. Sure it had a few kinda slow moving parts, but it was a pretty engrossing and interesting flick. I recommend it
At the very least, give it a rent, you might be surprised

I thought "Stir of Echoes" was great. Although "The Sixth Sense" is superior, "Stir of Echoes" is very entertaining and holds it's own.
I found the entire premise of the film extremely creepy. I remember after the seeing the movie, my wife wanted me to go downstairs and get her a glass of water . . . couldn't do it!!!

Writer/director David Koep gives good commentary. Koep is best known for writing screenplays for Brian DePalma and Spielberg. As Koep chats, you get the sense that he is very smart about his approach to directing films. He also gives you a few good screenwriting tips as well.
