I've never seen "Abyss" yet. I just know it is a sci-fi movie and do hope it would be a exciting one as "Matrix". Do you guys think it is worth buying? Please guide me.

....nor as slow as "Sphere" or "Event Horizon". The "making of" documentary alone is worth the price. I highly recommend "The Abyss". Great filmmaking (until the bogus ending). If the DVD has all of the extras that came on LD SE, it's a no brainer. Get it.

There is really no comparison between the Abyss and the Matrix. The Matrix is pretty much straight action, whereas I would consider the Abyss an action/thiller or action/suspense. I keep going back and forth on whether I should order it, I guess I'll have to see what sort of deals I can get when I do the preorders for that month
It's a really good movie, but I thought the ending was a bit goofy...

Oh yeah, it's right in the same vein as how THE WIZARD OF OZ is like DELIVERANCE and how BRAVEHEART is like BACK TO THE FUTURE!
Seriously, the two films are radically different forms of sci-fi, but they are both superb in their own right. One thing puts THE ABYSS ahead of THE MATRIX, though. It is more emotionally powerful and resonant. It has much more to say than THE MATRIX. Oh-so-definitely recommended.

A curious mix of the best and worst in motion picture entertainment--that's right, it's Filmmaker's DVDTracker list!
...and the fun doesn't stop there--check out how the madness all began with Filmmaker's Laserdisc Tracker list!

yspak, I think THE MATRIX is a phenomenal piece of work, one of the most original pieces of science fiction I've seen in a long time, but THE ABYSS is a bona fide sci-fi classic (especially if we're discussing the director's cut). So, in simpler language, yes, I prefer THE ABYSS to THE MATRIX. Neither one is what I'd consider shabby work, though...

Yes The Abyss is long, and it is sometimes slow moving, but it s one hell of a motion picture. I just wish I knew for sure whether it will be 5.1. I would assume so, but not all the sites list it as such.

Image Entertainment list the Abyss:Spec.Ed as AC3 {5.1} and THX.

Sounds like the Seamless branching has been pulled from the dvd, The Digital Bits have said that James Cameron has decided to put only the Special edition on the disc, I this is true I won't be buying it

chriswhite, you prefer the original, inconsistently edited version, with the poorly executed finale, to the masterpiece that is the Special Edition director's cut?!?!?! I, for one, am glad to see it go--now there will be more disc space available to transfer the SE version, thereby cutting down on possible compression and artifacting problems.
