I just found out about the Citibank5 coupon at Reel.Com and looking to buy the Steven Soderbergh flick, Sex Lies and Videotape. I was wondering what it's about, and is it good?
I'm probably the biggest Soderbergh fan ever! So, I'm looking to buy a good movie, but I just want to make sure it's worth it. Please post your thoughts here, if you have any. Thanks a bunch.

And as a true DVD fan, why would anyone watch this movie with such a heinous title! (Okay, some of us can't get past "Sex" so you're excused.)

Troystiffler,
If you're the biggest Soderbergh ever then why haveb't you seen "Sex, Lies and Videotape" yet? Anyway, it' a comedy-drama centered around four characters in New Orleans. Funny, moving and well-made, this was the indie film that changed the modern indie film. Definitely worth seeing and getting but I recommend that you rent it first and then decide if you'd like it to join your collection.

Seems to be differing opinions here. I thought it was quite good, although it may not be what some expect. Forget about the sex, there isn't much. It's mostly a talk-driven character study. James Spader is excellent in this film. It also features the debut of a young Laura San Giacomo, who is HOT in this movie, absolutely gorgeous. I don't like Andi Macdowell myself but she doesn't get in the way too much.
The DVD transfer is amazing, it really looks good. This disc has both P&S and 1.85:1 versions on it.

Doh! I think I would have bought it anyways just to complete my Sodergergh collection, but I dragged my feet too long. It's now off of the Reel 50% off list. O well maybe next time. Thanks guys for the reviews.

I saw about the first hour of this movie not too long ago, and I wasn't too impressed. However, if you're undecided about buying this title, keep in mind that it has a commentary by Soderbergh, whose commentary on "Out Of Sight" seems to be a very popular one. I believe the commentary also features Neil Labute, director/screenwriter of "In The Company Of Men" and "Your Friends And Neighbors"

I thought this movie was great. Not a lot of action, if that is what you are looking for. But an incredible character study, and there are quite a bit of intertwining plot twists and metaphors.
I found this movie to be more thought provoking than anything else, so if you are looking for a thrill ride, forget it.
But, then, my tastes may differ from those of the more vocal members here. I did not like "Dark City," and a lot of people here have raved about that one. I thought "The Usual Suspects" was OK, but trite and I knew the "surprise" at the end within about 10 minutes of watching the beginning.

That's funny Hoc, someone who agrees with me on all three of the movies you mentioned. Actually I didn't think Dark City was all that bad, but not nearly as good as some seem to think it is. I wonder if it had been a megahit if the same people would like it as much......
